Learning Levels - What it takes to change your life?

Have you ever asked yourself what it takes to learn something?

Levels of learning is a model created by Gregory Bateson’s, an anthropologist who studied the process of learning and change. Gregory noticed that learning and change that we go through has patterns and fall under the logical levels.

The model shows us what are the levels of learning each of us goes through, or to put it simply what kinds and stages there is to learning and change.

Learning Levels

The levels have a hierarchy to them, a change in the lower levels could have a small impact while a change in the higher levels could make a huge change in our life. If you are fimiliar with the logical levels you will find it very similar, that's because the logical levels are based on this model.

This model is very effective in understanding how change goes through our mind and the impact of different beliefs on our capabilities. Anyone could use this model to get another perspective on his life and see what's blocking him from making the changes we want.

Learning 0

Learning 0 is no learning, simply responding to stimuli but making no changes based on
experience or information. A change in environment can produce a certain behaviour but won't necessarily teach him something.
"give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime" - here you simply give a man a fish.
If you remove any sweets from someone house it may stop him from eating sweets for a while, but it won't take out his desire to eat sweets. Therefore the person might go back to old habits and eat sweets in the near future.
Sometimes, even when attempting to teach, there is no capacity for “learning”. Such as a baby who is dependent on his parents to do everything for him or sick people who cannot move out of bed.

Learning 1

Learning 1 is learning how to do things and acquiring knowledge. A change in a specific response by correcting the errors of choice within a set of alternatives, by directing someone to create new behaviour you can produce new capabilities.
Pavlov’s famous psychological experiment is the best example for learning 1. Every time Pavlov rang the bell they fed the subject dog and recorded his saliva excretion. After a while, he started ringing the bell without bringing any food for the dog, but the dog has already connected the ringing bell with feeding time and began drooling when the bell rang. Eventually all the dogs in the experiment start drooling whenever he rang the bell regardless of whether it was feeding time or not.

A simpler example from our lifes is when a coach is pushing you to do certain behaviours in order to make you change, people go to coaches because they know that they need to change but they are unable to make themselves invest the time/energy/money needed.
You can see how this kind of learning is harder than "learning 0", here you have to create behaviours (= work) and usually, new behaviours are out of our comfort zone.

Learning 1 is teaching a man how to fish!

Learning 2

Learning 2 is changing a mindset, by teaching someone new knowledge and capabilities, we can change their beliefs and values. Once a person changes his belief, he has a new point of view on what is possible and what is not. Therefore, a whole new set of behaviours and capabilities can be open (or close) to him.
Someone who doesn't have positive thinking has no idea that he has negative thinking. But once he adopts the belief of positive thinking, he will change the whole way he thinks (a change in capabilities and behaviours). This new way of thinking can lead him to be open to try new things.

People send their children to school in order for them to gain knowledge and capabilities with the hope that they will get values. They learn what is important and what’s not, what is effective and what’s not, they learn how they should think and what’s right. This is why education is so important, not only for kids to know history but also to have a good set of beliefs and values. These days, not all school systems are effective, I think we can all agree on that.

Learning 3

Learning 3 is a deep change, a total change in the belief system, an adoption of a whole new Identity. Or in other words, once you change enough beliefs you are changing your identity. Once you take on a new identity, you will change everything from your behaviour to your values.

Think about a person who was religious all his life and something or someone led him to stop believing in God. Think about what a huge impact it would have on his life, on his whole belief system, on his values and behaviours. This person who was just "I am a believer" is now "I am an atheist" (or whatever). This kind of identity take will make a change in all the other learning levels.

Most people don't change on this level, if they do, then it usually happens once or twice in our lifespan and I'm sure that there are people who went through a few "identity changes" in their life.

Robert Dilts took this model of "Learning Levels" and created a model called "Logical Levels". If understood, this model may be the strongest tool you could use for self-reflection and change in your life.

This is a very deep post. As long as we are alive, we should keep on learning. When we make effort to learn, we are actually investing in ourselves.

Where would behavior modification fall in here? Level 1? Thanks this post really has me thinking.

Using behaviour in order to create capabilities is Learning 1.
Thank you :)

Very informative article @paps .... Nice work done by you....

Thank you

Cool post! Having this informarion makes the whole process a little bit easier by understanding how heavily certain actions and new behaviours can improve us.

Thank you :)

well ok, but I think it's too short to get me to learn anything.

Other than that, well formatted, I wonder where all the views are from

haha I will make sure to not reveal anything then :D reading into people's identities :)

I love how everyone is focused on the top levels :D

Haha, thank you for a great comment!
It's our job to help ourselves and others to move up the ladder ^^

We're going to have to start checking your posts out more often @paps. some good stuff in here! Upvoted.

Thank you :)

before I don't like reading but when I started being independent I realize I have lack of knowledge about many things.. so now I started reading and learning.. its not too late for us to learn ..

Yes!

Each being is a reflection of the books you read, the tapes you listen too (how one programs themselves), and the people we associate with. Look into our own lives and the lives of others and you will see this truth. The environment will reveal the Truth, not opinion. Nature has no contradictions. Look and you will see. Of course, you do have the right to choose to lie to oneself, and I have no right to take that choice away from you. Of course, there will be consequences. That is `natural law'. There is no defying natural law without consequence.

Please have a look @ocd :)

very, very interesting. Right now, we have a lot of people who really need some level 3 learning....

You are right, I would say that all of us could use it in one way or another :)

Thanks @paps for another very interesting post. I think most of us have experienced all 4 learning levels at some point in our lives. I probably experience mostly Levels 1 and 2. I've had a few Level 3 learning experiences, which has been great. I think it might be better not to have too many.

Thank you!
The more Identities you have, the more options you have. Whether that identity has a good or a bad set of ideas to it is something else. It's our job to be self-reflective and mindful.

This post describe life. I want more people have the chance to read it so I will reestem.

That's a very systematic approach i can connect to my life. I experienced each level, level 0 sure unconscious all others conscious. Very interesting, thank you for sharing the knowledge! My full upvote!

Thank you!
For sure all of the levels can be both conscious and unconscious. Usually, we are not conscious to other ideas if we haven't accepted them yet.

Thank you BOTTY! :D

Great learning post buddy. Life is full of learning curves and one should never stop learning. Be it educational learnings or learnings from past situations. Loved reading it. Regards Nainaz

really enjoyed your post.. NLP is good stuff too.. Richard Bandler has to be getting up in the years by now.. at this time we are taking it up a notch to Learning III .. :) good way to put it

Thank you for your kind words and a great comment :D
I really work toward an identity change and I feel like steemit has a big part in it!

that is true.. I start camera classes on Monday..and I am writing more..it will help keep you learning and improving :)

Awesome :)

Good stuff. Level 3 is heavy stuff. It's the type of thing that changes the platform by which you stand.

Thank you!
Yea, Learning 3 is a totally new view of the world. Think about it for a second, I'm sure you have few memories in which you tell yourself "wow I was a totally different person then" based on one different belief. Think what happens when you have a set of many different beliefs changing.

I wish it was working that way but generally a shock/crisis is what changes people's mind.

Moreover, dont you think that NLP is used by the media 24/7 since Bernaise (freuds's nephew) found out that humans were programmable?

  ·  7 years ago (edited)

No, I don't think NLP is used by the media to control the people :)
Ofc they use many communication techniques in order to be more appealing and persuasive but there's nothing wrong with that...
If you would study hypnosis you would find for example that you cant be hypnotized if you are resisting it or don't want it, even if it's in an unconscious way...

I would recommend you to go and have a real look at what is NLP, you will find out it's simply a tool for modelling excellence. The techniques residing in NLP are most effective in helping yourself!

Btw, your comment is a perfect example for an Identity with a set of beliefs that you took upon yourself :)

If you would study hypnosis you would find for example that you cant be hypnotized if you are resisting it or don't want it, even if it's in an unconscious way...

I truly believe in NLP and hypnosis to DEprogram onself, but the scope of the programming must be recognized first.

one must be aware of this in the first place, otherwise the mind does not know if it wants it or not... when I see the media repeating "russia/iran/isis/ect... this is mass hypnosis. I am a certified practitioner of hypnosis, and I am see it... the war agenda uses NLP.

Think you should watch The Century Of The Self, a blockbuster on YT, millions of views... exposing the nasty side effects of Bernaise' social programming by psychoanalysis. It is well documented, I am not making anything up :)

I watched it, I also know how easy it to get dragged into conspiracies. I know media is not the most honest system out there. Never the less, we shouldn't live our lives with the Idea, everybody, trying to control us. Governments are a complex system which one man or a group cannot control anymore and sometimes bad stuff happening seem like they are organized but it could be the work of one faulty part in the system or mistakes/stupidity.

Anyway, without people trying to always balance this system it will all be worse, I say it with a point of view of someone living in Israel, I also see how the media in the world showing us and distort the information.

Knowing and using NLP, spreading those ideas can improve individuals that could lead real change.

I also know how easy it to get dragged into conspiracies.

the brain works like a computer and will only analyze the data that is put in

no conspiracies but facts... the century of self is hard to debunk... as much as big pharma whose dreams is to get us all medicated.

I do not hypnotize people who are not aware enough of the true reality of this world because chances are that the session will not have long term effects.

economics manipulates the planet... and people contending otherwise do not much about economics. drop by my blog :)

Very much impressed by your post, about philosophy of life and learning principles... So nicely describe here... Resteemed!

Thank you!

The line forms to the back of me for the Level 3 learning. I like this post and hope you will expand on it a little bit more one of these days.

I like the way your mind thinks.

Wonderful work Thank you :)

Thank you soo much!

great piece

Identity level change is the highest level of learning.

So then the logical question is, how do we change our identity?

Identity level change happens most organically on the cultural level.

For example, if you want to learn martial arts, you can get a martial arts book and begin practicing on your own, and develop some experiential learning.

However If you join a martial arts group, you will be getting constant feedback from everyone around you on how tom improve, you will get ccountability that will pull you in the direction of improvement, and most of all, you will identify as part of the group.

If everyone around you is a martial artist, and they accept you into the group, you will naturally begin to identify as one of those martial artists, and will begin to take on the values, beliefs, and behaviors of that group, with very little conscious effort needed on your part.
