1. The map is not the territory.
Starting off with the most important rule, we are separate from reality!
The map of the world we have in our minds is not the real world.
The map is a metaphor for our belief system, values and principles. Reflecting the way we view the world (our reality). This rule telling us that each person has a different reality, based on the fact that we all have different maps and ways to view the world. Instead of interacting with the world, you interact with your map.
2. People work perfectly.
People are not broken, therefore they need no repair. people function perfectly, even if the results are counter productive or harm them. All behavior has a structure, When you change the method of action you can change the outcome to something more desirable.
3. People always make the best choice for them at any given time.
Every behavior, whether it's evil, weird or crazy is the best choice for this person in that moment. If given to a person a better choice (which fit his model of the world), he would make use of it. You can add choices to change a person's behavior. When you take away choices, other compensating behaviors can occur.
4. People have all the resources they need.
By resources, I mean the internal responses and behaviors we need to get the desired response. Different people have different dreams and people have all the resources they need to achieve their goals and desired results. This does not mean they will succeed, only that they have the needed potential to do so! success determined by action taken. Maybe you know someone who is charismatic and alpha in a group but can't show leadership at work?
5. The meaning of communication is the response you get.
Also one of the most important rules of NLP. This assumption forcing you to take full responsibility for the results of your communication.
If you don't like the result you need to change the way you communicated. Each person acts according to his own map and if you only use your own map in the communication with other people... probably you won't get the results you want to get. You should remember that you are not communicating to hear yourself speak! you want to get a certain response.
(Both verbal and non-verbal behaviors trigger responses in others.)
6. Every behavior has a positive intent in some context.
I call it "The principle of positive intent", there's a positive intent lies within every behavior. This assumption separates the person from the action. Someone can be terrified of speaking in front of an audience, the fear positive intent is probably to protect the person, prevent failure or making fool of himself. But the fear does not fit the situation since there's no actual risk for his life.
7. You cannot not communicate.
Even when we say nothing, the mind affects the body and our body language will communicate the message. Even the absence of a response is information. For instance, when someone stops talking suddenly or becomes quiet.
8. Mind and body are connected.
There's an inseparable connection between the mind and the body, each affects the other and they form a system. For example, we can observe hand movements and see the process of thinking and pulling out information in the brain. Things like the speech, tempo and breathing rate influenced by the psychological state of a person. Just like the mind affects the body, behaviors can influance your psychological state!
9. If one person can do it, you can learn how to do it
This assumption is simple, if any one in the world producing a certain result, you also, with the same thinking, information and set of actions/behaviors can learn how to do it and produce a similar result.
10. There is no failure, only feedback.
Every result gives you information, maybe about how to do something different in the future or what you should not do?
If you accept this assumption then your attitude toward "failure" will produce more positive results in the future! You can take something positive from every experience.
11. The person and the behavior are separated
When you were babies you cried a lot, does this mean you are a crybaby now? We are not our behaviors and that means you can change your behavior if you want!
This of yourself not as arts, but an artist who can create any art to his Contentment.
12. Flexibility is power.
The person or element with the most flexibility in a system will have the most influence. The more mind flexibility a person has he will open up to more options, therefore his ability to change himself and influence will be bigger. More flexibility means being more open minded trying new things that can lead you to your goals and results you want.
This is very sound advice. We can change ourselves, be more happy if we apply these rules in our lives.

David Bandler, who created this system, shared a teacher with William Burroughs. The teachers name was Alfred Korzybski and he's epic.

I'd have sworn he was, I still have one of Korzybski's works in my library but I cannot find where I saw the two attached. Don't think I imagined it, but you're right. Does Bandler cite Korzybski anywhere.

Very interesting.
I was just the other day watching a youtube video with a gentleman by the name of Brian Tracey who said that exact thing..."There is no failure, only feedback".
However, an important point would be for us to learn from our "feedback" and not repeat it, unless that feedback has at some point turned into success.

You are right! I was thinking about adding another one called "Change what isn't working" :)

Yeah, go for it!
You would think as humans, since we tend towards the path of least resitance, what works is ultimately less work and should be the natural path for us.
I think some of us just get caught up in cycles of seeing the feedback as failure, probably partly to being in todays world where we expect the results immediately. Instead of putting in the work or action now as the seed of a future reward, remembering to water daily and having patience + trust in nature to deliver the future fruits of our labour.
Best strategy I guess is to plant multiple seeds and hedge our bets to find what works and weed out what doesn't quickest?
P.S. Apologies for the excessive plant analogies 😊 🍀

for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction - is NLP not simply applying these proven fundamentals to our mind ad body? I don't need scientific evidence to see that having a positive mental attitude, being open to changes, and understanding that I have choices that affect my life to know that it works - Iv'e watched it happening in my own life and the lives others - especially those who choose to victimize themselves and blame the world for their woes... those who have taken their lives in to their own hands and embraced NLP seem to have more fulfilling and rewarding lives.

I've been acquainted with a great many of these ideas when I was training as a life coach, but I still picked up some new ones here. Its really interesting.
This I agree with wholeheartedly. Its like short term Darwinistic adaptation in play.
I think this should be the other way around though. I have the privilege of knowing a great many charismatic individuals, and all of them were great leaders. I think the only two valid approaches here might be that a workplace leader by designation need not necessarily have the influence and command of a true alpha and leader to lead outside of his post, or a genuinely charismatic leader and alpha who is outside of the realm of his expertise and so must defer to another who is of greater expertise in the situation at hand, suggesting a choice not to lead for better outcomes, which in itself demonstrates genuine leadership mindset.

Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

They are crucial! For example, it will be hard to help someone overcome a fear if you don't understand the positive intent behind the fear. There are few more presuppositions but I felt like those are the important one's.

You was speaking that every posture has some positive meaning. I am not sure if positiveness is the correct word. :D I think that positivity or whatever in combination with time must lead into deep social meaning. Because once you get the positivism the whole discuss changes. I just wondered from the context of your number six sentence if you thought really about this principle. It would be interesting to formulate this principle on philosophical level, or because I am sure this already exist in some verbal form find it out connect to it. D:

Most of the things written here are from a psychological point of view but they have philosophical implications. Also by saying positive intent I meant beneficial/protective and I think you understand this ^^
Understanding this principle will improve you dramatically in every social interaction :)

I am not sure now, but I am afraid you cant actually protect your mind from yourself.
And from the philosophical point of view we are all You. Once again considering how social life nowadays looks on the street... I only think protection of anything is unnecessary. Because when everything is clean it can't harm you. And finally when we are becoming clean we can clean our environment which is very critical at this point. This actually makes internet very psychedelic place because you can't see the people on the other side so you have nothing left but serving certain Ideas.
I think you can understand me. If you want to get some emotional perceiving of life, then you have friends and people around you but when people are sharing emotions on network they become demonic as if those emotions were higher then the actual perceiving of emotions themselves. :( I am not saying that internet is not included in Life but life on the internet is not included in ourselves. :D

"Even when we say nothing, the mind affects the body and our body language will communicate the message. Even the absence of a response is information. For instance, when someone stops talking suddenly or becomes quiet."
The above suggest a causal interaction. While is could be granted that some actions suggest causality, i do not believe in such because in most cases, accidental occurrences are regarded as causation.
It is like saying the feeling of being hungry prompted me to eat food but where can we draw the line? At what point did one affect the other?
This is a topic i will discuss soon and i will try mention you so that you can share your opinion. You are doing great brother!

Have you heard that verbal communication only takes 7% of our communication? The non-verbal; body language 55 percent and tone of voice 38 percent. Of course, you can't be 100% sure about these numbers, but the estimation pretty close.
Can you imagine yourself in a date and there's an awkward silence, wouldn't it reflect with your body language? there a clear message that any one looking can see :)
But I will take it a step further and say that any moment we reflect how we feel with our body language!
