We are focused on killing a perpetrator but is any sort of "violence" or aggression towards someone equally as wrong as killing is to some? I'm just trying to think... for instance if someone was going to kill, rape, or molest, one of your family members and we think it's wrong to kill in their defense is it also wrong to beat up, forcefully engage, etc?? As Christians where is the line and where is common sense on this? Do we just say... not my will be the Lords be done? Call the police and let them kill or contain? It almost seems like the religious people who don't take any medication and let their kids die because they only believe that God heals. Maybe not completely like that but seems to be along the same lines.
The full quote is 'greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.' So I would say the greatest violation of love is to destroy the life of a friend.
I'm sure this is a question the early church struggled over, especially during the persecutions. Personally, tend to think that watching someone else getting hurt or killed is like being an accomplice, and using violence to stop the aggressor is the only way to do that sometimes. Also, I'm not sure that refusing to defend yourself is the thing to do if someone attacks you.
