How did I end up living in Mexico after coming here for a holiday one year ago?

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

I came to Mexico for a holiday exactly one year ago and I ended up living here since then.

This photo has just popped up on my Facebook feed as a "one year ago" memory. It gave me such a heartwarming moment, because all the memories about how I decided to stay here, how I managed to end my life in Hungary, etc., came into my mind. I can't tell you how grateful I am to be here, and I AM HAPPIER THAN EVER BEFORE!

So let me share my story with you....

A lot of things were going on in my life in the last two years. Getting married, getting divorced, travelling, searching for the real person who I am, etc... Anyways, I remember that I was sitting at home in October 2016 right after I got back from Hawaii, and I was already planning my next vacation somewhere. I had just got divorced at that time and travelling gave me happiness, so I just wanted to travel anywhere.

So I was sitting at home, and asked my parents when exactly I can go on holiday in January or February (because I used to work in our family business, so needed their approval of the date), so they told me I can go in February. Then I started searching for flight tickets somewhere. Didn't even know where, but I wanted to have any kind of flight ticket, knowing that I'm going somewhere in February, no matter what happens. First, I was checking the flight tickets to Hawaii again, because I completely fell in love with that place, but they were too expensive. Then I checked Cuba, because usually there are good deals to go there, but at that time, I couldn't find a good one. So randomly I checked Mexico, even though I never thought about going there. And guess what? The flight ticket was extremely cheap at that time, with a stopover in London!!! I was planning to come with my Hungarian friend who lives in London anyways, so I called here, told her the price and without even thinking, we bought our flight tickets immediately.

So I came here in February 2017 with Viola, my Hungarian friend and travelled within Riviera Maya. First, we went to Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Coba, Tulum, then Playa del Carmen. As soon as I arrived to Playa, I felt like I was at home. I felt like this is what I need right now! At that time, I was totally fed up with living in a tiny town in Hungary with it's 2300 inhabitants, I wasn't happy running the family business, because even though it's going well, I knew that this is not meant for me. I have to find my own path, my own passion, I want to establish something by myself, not just continuing what my parents have built up. I'm extremely proud of them for what they've achieved in their life, but I'd like to be proud of myself, too, establishing something by myself.

Viola and I

I had a huge struggle in my head about what I should do. I was sure I'll be extremely happy if I stay, because I love adventures, and also, finally I'm out of my little hometown, in fact, I can live in paradise instead. But on the other hand, I was sure that my parents are gonna be shocked if I tell them that I'm staying, I quit the family business and let's see what happens. So I was just thinking and thinking and thinking, and finally I decided to stay, no matter what they say.

I will never forget the day when I told my parents that I'm staying in Mexico.

We were in Cozumel and we decided to run a Half Marathon in the morning. We woke up at 6 am to go early and avoid the heat, but it was still completely dark outside, so we decided to wait until the sun starts rising. We were just sitting and waiting, then in one second, it popped into my mind like a thunderbolt, that I have to call my parents right now. So I did it. I called them on Skype, and only my mum was at home. She was having a bowl of soup at that time and when I told her "Mum, I'm staying in Mexico", she got frozen :D She was holding the spoon in front of her mouth without moving, she looked like a statue. Then after a few seconds she was finally able to say something, and the only thing she could say was: "I'm not happy, but what can I do, right?". So that was it :D I was really happy, because I thought the reaction will be much worse.

Then I went to run a half marathon finally, and when I got back, I called them again, my daddy was at home already, too, and actually, they were so cool about the whole thing, I couldn't even believe. They saw I was not happy in my hometown anymore, and they told me that they respect my decision if this is what makes me happy. Guys, I can't tell you how grateful I am for having such a lovely, supportive family. I love them from the bottom of my heart!

After the 2 weeks vacation, instead of staying in Mexico just like that, I still went back to Hungary to finish my life there, especially because the trial about the divorce was 2 days after my holiday. So I just wanted to bring it to the end, but I a bought my flight ticket back to Mexico while I was still here in Playa del Carmen, just to make sure that I don't change my mind while I'm in Hungary. So I spent only 1 week at home, then I was already back in Mexico. And here I am since then :)

At the beginning, I didn't know anybody, I had no job, no place to stay, but I found a job and an apartment within a week and I made lots of friendships since then.

Mexico gave so much to me during the last year! I found my perfect healthy diet here that helps managing my diabetes, I found my real passion here, what I'd like to do in my entire life, I met amazing people here, I got introduced to Steemit here, and the list of great things goes on... But that's gonna be another blog post :)

Thank you very much for reading my story. I hope you liked it, and I hope I can inspire you to GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE and LIVE THE LIFE YOU DREAM OF! It doesn't mean you have to leave your country, what I'm saying is: DO WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY!

Did you learn Spanish? How easy or difficult it is to get a permanent resident visa in Mexico?

She’s probably there illegally like most white people in Mexico.

Be careful though, certain places in Mexico are not safe

Haha no worries, I'm a real traveller :)

Thank you very much though, I really appreciate it🤗

Wow nice story! Enjoy your life dear :)

Thank you very much :)

Sometimes you just have to do what your heart tells you to, even if it is as scary as moving to another country without a job or relatives. Happy that everything worked out well for you.

Thank you so much for your kind words my Dear. This is so true! :)

Wow what a brave move. I fully understand the desire to make such a change. It's great that you had the guts to do it.
I believe that the very things that we feel are trials or hardships often give us the impetus to drive us to the difficult changes that make a real difference in our lives.

The wife and I had similar choices to make when we were both in good secure corporate positions in a major city in South Africa.
We dicided to take the plunge and leave that world, which was not making us happy, and start a little farm in a dry and hot area in the Western Cape,

Were still in the starting phase, and were still scared, BUT were happy and fulfilled and know that this is the right choice for us and our kids.

These hard choices are the important ones...all the best to you with yours :)

Oh my God @towjam, what a wonderful story!! I'm so glad you made a change in your life, too. Even if we have "everything" at home, we might now be happy. So what does "everything" worth if the most important thing is not ours: HAPPYNESS.
I was so glad to read your story, thank you very much for sharing with me, and thank you for your kind words, too.
I wish you all the best, LOVE and HAPPYNESS :)

Thank you!! We are really nervous and excited still, but I'm sure it will pay off on the important things just as yours will.

All the best to you that side!

I love your story!! Im now living in LA, i'm originally from Chile, and I've lived in London, Australia and Boston. I think one has to look for the place to live that fits you, its insane to think that you are going to be borned in the perfect place for you, that would be way to much of a coincidence... most people just stay in their country because they don't imagine whats out there

That's so true. And many people still don't understand why I don't wanna live in Hungary right now.. Well, I just wanna be somewhere, where I feel like I'm home :) I'M so glad you made such movements, too, and thank you very much for your kind words. Take care my Dear :)

Such a great story I can relate too. It is not easy to tell your parents you are moving away. Dream big and follow your heart!

Thank you so much for your kind words my Dear! You truly have a big heart <3

I was born in Mexico and I still live here. I live near Mexico City and I can say that I am very happy living here. It has it's advantages and disadvantages. Food is great and very cheap, but technology is expensive and sometimes it doesn't even work. I've been without Internet for almost a week... Mexico has it's troubles, but also has a lot of potential, most of people have good hearts and we want to contribute to a better world.

Mexico is truly wonderful, I'm just starting discovering other parts of it, too. I'M going to Guanajuato next week, and I also want to visit many more states soon :)

truly an amazing story you got there...God really has His own reasons for letting some bad things that happens in our life..keep sharing :D

Thank you so much for your kind words my Dear! I'll definitely keep sharing my photos and stories, I hope you'll like them :) Take care

A wonderful story and thank you for sharing it. One of the gang from Steem Team Cancun https://steemit.com/travel/@michhart/steemit-viajeros was in PDC the other day, it's a shame he didn't let you know. I promise that before the month is over I'll head to Playa and we'll have a meetup so we both have something to write about. I'll make sure to msg you in the group chat so we're on the same page and we can plan it out.

Dear @mithrilweed , that sounds great!!! I would love to finally meet you in person :) And if we had a Steemit meet up in PDC, I'd be thrilled!! Currently I'm in Tulum I'm not gonna be in Playa for long time anymore, because I started travelling within Mexico, but I'll be in Playa between the 24th of February and the 11th of March again. Let me know whenever you go there, I hope we can meet each other over there.

Life is funny that way. A quick trip to get away from it all can end up being a permanent move.
It was that way for me and China. I flew here for a visit and ended up finding my calling in life.
...Though I'll admit my story took a darker turn than yours, but never mind. It's gratifying to read another tale of "I visited the other side of the world, and ended up living there."

I'm so glad to hear that you wasn't afraid of moving there. I'M sorry to hear that it didn't end well, but I believe that everything happens for a reason :)

Thank you very much for your kind comment my Dear! Take care!

definitely holiday in Mexico fun enjoy

Very interesting story.. you really dare to take the decision to stay away from your family.
Thanks for sharing..

Thank you very much for your kind words my Dear :) Well, I love my family and it's not about staying away from them, it's more like finding my own path and living MY dream, not theirs. And I'm so glad I did it

That's amazing @plantbasedmiri
Getting your own way to achieve that dream is not easy. I am glad to hear that.

wow great story. do you like travel???
i like travel and story....
please carry on...

many many thanks for sharing us.its a nice story.
i like travel like you...

Such an inspiring story!

I'm from Venezuela and I'm planning on moving to Mexico because of the situation my country is going through, and your post just made my desire of moving out a lot stronger than it already was, even though you moved there for a totally different reason.

I met some people from Venezueal here, and they told me about the situation over there... I'm so sad to hear that :(

I went to Mexico for vacation and I SHOULD have stayed there.

very nice

Great, Great, great story! I can easily relate to it as I also work in a family Business and it always stops me from doing What I actually want to. My parents have sacrificed a lot to achieve what they have and I've always thought I can't do this to them and have stay here and help - feeling of gratitude. Having read your post now I know, it is possible to "live the life you dream of" - all you have to do is try. I hope that one Day I will be couragous enough to take a risk and do what I WANT! - Thanks (I actually cried during reading it!)

I had the same feeling, and I wasn't happy at all... THen I finally realized, that it was their dream, not mine. I'M extremely proud of them for whatv they have achieved, but rthey have to understamd that I have my own dreams, too and I can't be happy if I can't fulfill myself.

awesome story and you are beautiful looking.

your story is so inspirational to me since now i'm in the situation of what is my life? is it really i want to be?

Now i'm trying to move to another place that i've never been so your story somehow touched me a lot.

Thanks and happy new year (since here in korea we are celebrating Lunar new year this week! ) :)

Dear @shsleeper, I'M so glad to hear that I gave you some inspiration! I always recommend everybody to follow their dreams!! Otherwise, why are we here on Earth, right? I'd be happy to see your future post about how you moved to a different country ;) Happy New Year my Dear!

You were really brave to have done something like this. Moving away from your family and your confort zone seem so daunting, but we just have to let go sometimes to find our self. Kudos to your new adventures in sunny Mexico. :)

Thank you so much for your kind words my Dear!! I really appreciate it :) Take care

Great story. I too love Mexico. My wife and I have gone there 5 times already and still are not tired of it. We've gone to all of those places you mentioned.

Haha, I think you can never get bored of it :D

I don't think I'll get bored it, especially when there's so many places to go and see.

Great story. Love when things take turn to the better and plans work out

It is kind my story too, with a few differences. From Argentina to USA. I remember that call to home.

good to hear.........

It is said life is an adventure, but that is not true for many people. Either they are in circumstances they can't change or they are in circumstances they afraid of changing to take the big leap to pursue life as an adventure. It is inspirational to see people like yourself who took the chance to find their happiness and succeeding. Congrats on the new home!

Thank you so much for your kind words my Dear, this is so true! Have a wonderful day :)

and I'm quoting this because I really like it. GET OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE and LIVE THE LIFE YOU DREAM OF and DO WHATEVER MAKES YOU HAPPY! which I couldn't agree more, our happiness is in our own hands, follow what your heart desires. This was a good read. Thank you for this!

Thank you so mcuh for your kind words my Dear, I'm so glad you enjoyed reading it :) I'M sending you lots of hugs and kisses

Beautiful read to start a beautiful day! I can only imagine the courage it takes to hit restart button on life. The pics are beautiful too (you included). Have a great life ahead!

Thank you so much my Dear, I'm so glad you liked my post and thanks for your kind words, too :) Take care!

I wanna to go mexico beach .
This so famous!

I want to move there but their immigration laws are more strict than ours in U.S. Maybe they'll put a door in the wall that swings out.

Actually, lots of Americans live here in Mexico. I know lots of them. SomI'm.pretty sure it's possible, but Indon't knownthe way to do it.

great and touching story thanks for sharing it with us! Enjoy that beautiful country =)

Thank you very much for your kind words my Dear :)

Nice shot.

Dear @jerrybanfield, I'm not sure I can enter the Supernatural Writing Contest with this article, but it might be interesting for you to read it. :)

@teamsteem, you might be interested in reading my story, because I think it can be a great inspiration for toher Steemians to follow their dreams and get out of their comfort zone.

Tetap semangat menjalani hari.

I'm glad to read this. I don't believe in coincidence. I've travelled and lived in a few different places. I was supposed to go to Mexico for Anarchapulco and Anarchaforko, but things happened and couldn't go. However, I've had the feeling to be stuck here and need to get away. Mexico is still on the books, and I think your story is just the push I needed. Thank you and following your journey.

Dear @misslasvegas, I'M so glad my story inspired you a little bit. I hope you'll kick your ass , buy a flight ticket and go! ;)

I am planning to do this soon enough 😊 I think the one thing holding me back is that so far every country I went to supposedly only for a holiday or short time, I ended up staying longer than expected. But I was alone then and that was fine. Now there are a few kids and animals to move along. BUT, where there's a will, there's a way. It will come, but maybe with some roundabouts because I feel very strongly that there is a reason why I'm still here and this is unfolding right now. I have been to Mexico quite a few times actually, when I lived in the US, to renew my visa. But people either laugh or feel sorry for me, saying what a dump it is. And even funnier is that I LOVED my 3 days there every 3 months because I met some awesome local people. The place I'm talking of is Tijuana. So to me, if that place is a dump, then the rest of Mexico is heaven on earth so I'm quite looking forward to seeing the rest!
