What Have I Just Done? Why Did My Health Insurance Want My Blood!

WHAT DID I JUST DO?

Let me first explain what is going on and what I may have gotten into.

In 2015 the company I work at for close to 25 years had what was called a "Wellness Screening". The health insurance we have had a lab come to my work and offered to check health conditions like our cholesterol, weight, and blood pressure and talk about health issues.

At the time, everyone just thought of it as just a "better health" kind of thing. You did not have to do it but there was a discount if you did.

If you participated, you would receive $10 off a month on your health insurance for the next two years.

I figured, sure, anything I can do to save some money.

FAST FORWARD TO 2017

Remember that screening was good for a couple years, so in 2016, nothing had been talked about or mentioned again. A couple months ago, my company sent us a letter about our upcoming health insurance.

We are being asked to make an appointment with a local lab this time to go get some bloodwork done to participate in the "Wellness Screening".

Again, I do not have to do it, BUT.......

If I don't, my insurance will be $30 more a month. Those on the family plan, it is $45 more. CRAZY.

WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON HERE?

I have to wonder, just what is going on here. They say you don't have to do the "screening" but yet charge you so much more if you don't.

I can't help but wonder, what is going on with my blood?

Are they doing this to eventually prove you have health issues and can charge you more?

Are they doing this to prove you maybe are a health risk to charge you more?

Who knows what is going on here, but it is sure making me wonder if it is a way to just keep track of you.

Invasion of my privacy, and I let them in!

What do you think?

Is the Health Insurance company over stepping their boundaries?

I hate when this happens , it's their way of increasing their pay . They tell you that they will cancel after certain time if we do not use it , why use it if we don't need it then ? It just made make any sense to me

I have paid into insurance since I have worked and now they want blood too.

I feel so sorry to read this story. They could be doing anything. Who knows who the lab is connected to and what they are testing for. The fact that you get a discount tells me they really wanted this for some reason.

I didn't even mention the fact that insurance goes up every year anyway.

Aw! Sucks all around.

do it and save the money

They will take everything from us , they don't care

You can create scenarios where they are trying to help you, and others to harm. Maybe they are taking blood sample and are going to check for a variety of diseases and or other issues that can be deduced from the sample. So they can contact you if they find something that could be averted if you started treatment early, which would save them money versus starting treatment late. 50% of total medical spend on you will happen in the last 60 days of your life. So they don't want to be covering you in the last 60 days. They want you to make it to retirement and onto Medicare, before the big health spend occurs.

That is the positive scenario.

Lots of other negative scenarios can be invented.

Simple approach - why not justask why they are taking the blood samples, what they are doing with them, and how that is helping your health?

Just ask, is a simple approach that is often effective.

If they won't answer of explain, be worried and concerned

The answers we have been getting is to "make us aware of our current health and try to better it". Isn't this why they pay for 1 free physical with my doctor every year? Everything is about money these days so I am sure they benefit some how.

You will find that they won't tell the truth, even if you think they will. Especially if there is an agenda, and there is an agenda.

There is always an agenda, so true.

Don't do it. pay the extra. They can use anything against you.

That is very true. Thanks for commenting

Hi @ptmikesteem, it is scary in this day and age with the health insurance companies. My husband gets his screening and physical every year for the discount. Hopefully, the insurance company is just trying to find problems early if they are present to help you be healthier.

I resteemed your post and upvoted it. You brought up great points and I really liked your post. Shared on twitter, too~!

My health is not good at all, so I have no way to hide from the insurance companies even if I wanted to. I had a terrible bone infection (osteo myelitis) a few years ago. That was life threatening, and after a few weeks in the hospital, they did a partial amputation on my toe. Then in December I had open heart surgery. They know me inside and out.

Nice to know you on steemit!!

Thank you for upvoting and resteeming my post. I am sorry to hear about your health. you have been through a lot. I hope your health improves and things get better for you.
