Before we start, ask yourself a few simple questions:
- Do I have goals?
- If I have one, what is it exactly?
- If I succeed, how will I feel? What differences will I make?
- What plan do I have to achieve that goal?
- What are things that hold me back from executing my plan?
Let say you goal is to get 6 packs abs because you want to get ready for summer. If you succeed, you will feel more confident in your swimsuit. And you said to yourself you will exercise every day and cut all the junks. Summer came and you still eat potato chips and watch TV on the couch!
What happened? The first week was great, you went joggings every afternoon, threw out all the craps in your fridge, and easily lost a pound! One day your friends invited you to a party, uh oh they had tons of tempting delicious things you shouldn’t touch. Uncomfortable? Tempted? How can I deny such delicious pizza dripping with mozzerella? Ok a few bites can’t do any harm right?
The next thing you knew is you just ate like a mad man. Your effort put in last week went to waste. Guilty and depressed, you started all over again. But life kept throwing things at you and you eventually collapsed.
Do you have the ability to stick to your plan no matter the circumstance? Are you able to say no to things that hold you back? Are you strong enough to put your emotions aside and getting things done? If you have what it takes to say yes, then you are truly self-discipline.
“Once you have commitment, you need the discipline and hard work to get you there.” — Haile Gebrselassie
Self-discipline means doing what you should do rather than what you want to do, even when you don't feel like it.
At hearts of successful people lie self-discipline. With self-discipline almost any things is possible. But self-discipline is what most of us lack, that’s why it is so important to develop self-discipline if you want to stand out and be successful.
Being self-discipline requires will power and dedication. No one will tell you to get off your butt and go out exercise. No one will shout at you when deadline is near. No one will scream at you when you’ve done something horrible. No one! Being too easy on yourself weakens you. You have to be that person and save yourself!
Being self-discipline is hard. It means you have to sacrifice some of the things that bring you pleasure but not necessary help you archieve your goal, to do things that you usually don’t want to do, to ignore your emotions when needed… But the end result is well worth it.
