Today, for the first time since forever, I switched off Facebook. Done, gone. Why? I'm fucking utterly bored of it. For the last week, and several other weeks this has been my Facebook life:
- Sit down, have a cup of coffee and see what interesting things my friends have been up to lately.
- Browse through ad, after ad to get to the things that my friends are saying.
- I realise that Facebook are putting heavy weight on videos because I'm sure they are going to integrate adverts on every video soon, so that means I have to browse by every god damn video of someone's dog or cat doing silly stuff to get to see what my interesting friends are saying.
- I really don't know why Facebook shows me drama from the groups I'm in because I've long since stopped getting involved in the rubbish.
- Find a funny meme that a friend has shared, share that myself.
- Find something Political that I agree in, share that too because well, I want to make someone aware.
- Share a blog post and laugh inwardly because I know very few will see it.
- Get bored super quickly and log onto Steemit and actually challenge my brain. Spend the rest of the night on there.
I secretly despise social media
Don't know about you but I've long since despised the overreaching wing of social media that seeps into government clutches, and to be honest, I'm bored. I want something different. I want something owned by the people. Since I've been back I've had nothing but an enjoyable and uplifting experience. I've read great content, spoke to some amazingly inspiring people and finally feel like I have a base.
I feel like social media is rotting my brain. It's also causing me a negative response with the internal politics of friend circles. I like Steemits ideology in that it 'pays' to be nice. We are incentivised to do so. I watched one really angry person try to revolt against our community the other day, and even although he ploughed his entire crypto portfolio into Steemit, the people that own the place (us and you) pummelled them into dust.
That gives me hope.
I've long since looked for a community that I can grow in, and I'm not saying that Steemit is the answer to world peace, because it's not, but it's definitely a step in the right direction. Who knew that those of the Political left could have perfectly sensible conversations with those of the Political right? We've proven that it can be done. It's encouraged to be respectable to each other here.
What happens if everyone wants to try?
I often wonder, if Steemit ever achieves a mainstream-grade presence, which I am sceptical, what would it do to accommodate the general populous? Could that mean we could see an uprising in true reddit style fashion that a mere meme could be upvoted into oblivion? Someone with a slight bit of knowledge in how to create a meme could walk away as a millionaire the following day? Of course, people would well be in their rights to upvote such a thing. I probably would myself if I found it funny. It also gives rise to the question, "what sort of features can we accommodate so that everyone can use it, regardless of ability." Alas, this is the diamond question, do we just want to stay as a blogging platform? I've recently signed up for wildspark, that may be more accommodating for others.
Regardless, I'm a blogger and this is fast becoming a home for me. I'm surrounding myself in lovely, heart-warming people, and I don't have to worry about maintaining the complexities of day to day friendships. It's not that I don't enjoy them for what they are, it's just that, well, working online has its fair share of 'being around' and I feel sometimes I witness more than I should do if that makes sense? I'm 'around' too often. Scarcity is often better in friendships I feel. Perhaps maybe now, immersing myself in rich, diverse content that people have made an effort to create will have me thinking more forwardly.
Most of us do our best here
I also love the way this place encourages people to do their best. Good content is rewarded as well as effort, and often you'll see a diamond in the rough, which is why projects like @randowhale were formed, and @minnowsupport. I've watched some people on here grow fantastically as they've tried to find their shoes, it's been amazing to watch! @cali-girl, looking at you!!
That's not to say though that Steemit is without problems. Like every great platform comes a whackload of issues, for instance I'd love to have a 'save for later' button because my memory is absolutely diabolical, and an instant chat system too, that would be immense. I'd love to join steemit.chat again but I don't find opening another tab very appealing right now. I'm sure there are many more issues and functionalities we'd love to see fixed / integrated, but for me, it works and I like that.
Call this my central hub from now on methinks!
Thanks for listening :)

Good. Facebook will only keep you from your goals. I only use Facebook for the Messenger app to keep in touch with friends.
I wish you the best. Followed :)

I feel the same. After emerging myself into steemit going back to facebook is boring as shit. plus there is no engagement everyone is focused on there image, adds are covering the news feed so that you cant even follow what your friends are up. I basically use it for group messaging and group management.

So true! They've let dollar signs cloud their view of a good future. It's a pile of shit right now. Just going to use the messenger app from now on

It's an amazing cessation therapy, like quitting smoking for vaping. Your friends don't get it and some might think it's douchy when you talk about it, but no one realizes how good it can be till they get the right set up and use quality gear and technique. Difference is Steem doesn't make you stink like a kool aid glass or a creme brûlée.

Which side? All sides are geared to lead us to the same destination. I'd rather exist outside of society for a while methinks :)

It used to be like that, now it's something completely different, and yeah even with adblocker there's still ads everywhere, the worst part is they're usually the same 3 or 4 until you actually remove them
