How to "Shine Bright Like A Diamond" with Your Egotistical Boss

First of all, before I dive in I need/want to say that my article is a survival guide for those who feel they are having communication/personality clashes with their bosses. It's so funny for me to go to work some days and watch the day unfold. I have literally taken my emotions out of it and abide by three simple rules to get me through the day "shining bright like a diamond."

Some may think that this is kissing ass and honey...it is. You're getting ready to pucker up and lay a big fat juicy one on where the sun doesn't shine. Don't look it at that way. You're in the driver's seat and are carefully planning your strategy.

Life's so much bigger than what happens in the office. Always remember you matter and that no one can ever bring you down. It's only when you allow them can they shift your emotions. Okay, enough life coaching now lets dive into the good stuff.

To begin you should know that people who have huge egos have a reputation to uphold. They have a self-image that is rooted in their self-esteem and to question that leads to anger or sadness. The boss in question has a high need for significance and will find it by putting others down.

I myself am in a similar situation. Working with an egotistical boss can be challenging and rewarding at the same time. You really get to put your customer service skills to use. As you know your boss is your number one client and learning to work with an egotistical boss can really help you to develop your interpersonal skills.

I work for a small company in Silicon Valley, CA. My life is challenging with the day to day workload and a boss that needs A LOT of TLC.

Rule #1- I Didn't Tell You So

The first rule to note is that you never want to phrase anything in an "I told you so" manner. Remember your job is on the line. Rent due? Yea, let's keep the "I told you so's" to ourselves for now. You want to remember to not insult your boss as their ego has difficulty accepting they were wrong.

Rule #2- What a Great Idea "You" Had

The second rule to note is making your ideas sound like their ideas. They loveeeeee power. They love to be the "intelligent" one. They don't mind taking credit because it feeds their self-esteem need. Well to give you credit wasn't it your idea to make it sound like their idea?

Rule #3- Tone It Down

Speak in a submissive tone. Speaking in a calm submissive tone can help to keep your boss calm and under wraps. The flip side to this is you really need to understand their communication style. Some bosses like it when you sound frantic. Feel out the situation and see what it calls for. Everyone has their own unique communication style that helps them feel at home and some sick bastards like to see you jitter a little bit. I know I've been there.

Now, remember this article is about outthinking your egotistical boss not fighting the power. That's going to be discussed in a later article.

If you do all three of these things I guarantee they'll love you and you'll survive another day in the life with an ego manic boss. Not every boss will be good at communicating and hey that's okay. You're going to be playing your work life like a fiddle once you learn the right style that fits your boss.
