I have a request on behalf of all mail and package deliverers. I spent 4 months as a USPS mail carrier, which is a tough job because you have to deal with almost every type of weather (except things like extreme snowstorms, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.), not to mention criminals, dogs (and other animals), and temperature extremes. I had to quit because the summer was so hot I'd dehydrate faster than I could rehydrate. I tried to get further details about what it's like during the holidays by calling the post office, but the supervisor I spoke to said that I was asking for confidential information (I wasn't).
During the holiday season (from around the week of Thanksgiving to after the new year), carriers from the USPS, Fedex, UPS, DHL and all the other companies are absolutely SWAMPED, and this year is even worse than usual because of the pandemic. Amazon mostly does its own deliveries, but it uses the USPS, every Sunday, and so does UPS. Even Amazon is swamped!
Many of these people work 12-13 hours a day, or more, 7 days a week, for the entire holiday season and, if someone is out sick or on vacation, that's an even greater burden they must bear. This is especially true of the USPS, where they were already working 11-12 hour days as of T-day week and mail carriers have to go out two, three, or even four times in a row to deliver the mail AND packages. And, don't forget, they not only deliver your mail - they deliver all those packages, too, which means they have a MUCH harder job than anyone else in the delivery industry.
So, my request is this: learn to order and get things shipped to you ahead of the holidays, or after the new year starts. I know from talking to my own mailman that it's really hard during the holidays, and the supervisor I spoke to said that this year is even worse because of the pandemic. I'm sure that all the punitive (and some unethical) changes made by Trump's crony, Louis DeJoy, didn't help, either.
If you're in the business of selling, please don't have your Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and other major sales around the time of the holidays. Please reschedule it for earlier in the year (September or October?) to help all the companies that deliver packages avoid the rough challenges.
If you won't do it for all those overworked employees, do it for this guy. The poor fella's overworked! ;)
