We have black ants in Buffalo NY. For the most part, they are docile and just want to do their thing undisturbed. However I have seen them become aggressive. They grab on with those fierce mandibles and won't let go. You try to pull them off and their heads will come off still attached to your skin. Once we found a very large black ant over an inch long. We had never seen one that big before or ever again.
