Everyone will appreciate when people respect them but on your own part, the level of respect you expect from others, do you give it to others too? No matter what anyone thinks, respect should be mutual for it to make more sense. When you give respect, you will naturally attract respect.

Humility is not always measured in how you relate to your bosses, obviously, if you treat them without respect, they may fire you. However, effective humility goes to even how you relate with your subordinates. There is a particular adage in western part of Nigeria that expresses this fact:
If you kneel down as a sign of respect to greet someone, it will not make your height shorter. - Western Nigerian proverb [translated by me]
Respecting others also starts with self respect. Obviously, you can only give what is within your possession. If you lack respect for yourself, you will find it hard to show it to others. Self respect also covers respecting your efforts, your abilities, your hustles etc.
For you to respect yourself, many things should be put in place, like god morals, humility, self discipline and very importantly, good manners.
If you respect your boss at the office but disrespect your driver that is even as old as your father, then your humility is very questionable. Many people will only show niceness to people of high status or people that they hope to gain from but treat others (the nanny, the chef, the driver, the gate man, etc) with disrespect. Such people have already fallen short of the demands of respect.
Respect (and being nice) is not meant to be to a selected few. The beauty of respect is when it is shown to all - cos that is what humanity demands.

I absolutely agree! Respect is everything. I always say that you don't earn respect, you lose it. Treating people with respect, no matter who they are, should be the default, and if they show you that they aren't worthy of it, they might lose your respect.
