According to statistics from police investigations, in the case of violence against women in Italy in 2018, sputum and possessiveness were the main engine, accounting for 32.8% of the total number of female murders. And the annual sexual violence cases increased by 5.4% year-on-year, the murder case caused by entanglement increased by 4.4%, and the domestic violence case increased by 11.7%.
In 2017, the number of women killed in domestic violence in Italy was 112, and it increased to 119 in 2018. Of the female homicides targeted in 2018, 78 women died of partner killings, accounting for 65.6%, an increase of 16.4% compared to 2017. In addition, 59 of the victims died in the hands of their husbands or boyfriends, and 19 victims died in the murder of their ex-husband or ex-boyfriend.
Of all the women victims, 48 were over 64 years old, accounting for 33.8% of the total number of victims. And 28% of victims have experienced abuse, threats, and domestic violence during their lifetime, and usually third parties know their experiences.
Statistics show that in 2018, 66 people were killed in northern Italy, accounting for 45% of all women victims. There were 50 female victims in the southern region and 26 in the middle. In addition to jealousy and possessiveness, the motives for killing women include family disputes and quarrels, which account for 16%.
The report pointed out that in 2018, in the murder case against women, guns were the main crime tool, and 46 people died from shooting. In addition to the case of female murder, the total number of domestic violence against women was 17,453, the highest in the past five years.
