The Japanese art of Kintsugi- mending something broken and creating something stronger and more beautiful from the pieces~

A year and a half ago I was lost.

My insomnia was playing havoc with my health and state of mind. The insomnia was a coping mechanism brought to life by fear and uncertainty. I could hardly stand the thought of someone touching me, reeling from a severely emotionally abusive relationship six months prior. I was broken and raw, and it seems only natural that I found an art form that spoke to those parts of me.

Finding the art of Kintsugi was like a song, those cathartic notes that massage deep wounds. I threw myself into it, and as I mended my broken medium I, myself, started to heal too.

I used silver Precious Metal Clay to adhere the two porcelain pieces. It's an extremely cool material, it handles and forms just like clay because it is, clay with fine sterling silver particles suspended within it. Once fired, the organic bindings burn off and you are left with pure silver!

I used a mini butane torch to fire the clay once I created a vein of silver connecting the shards. It polished beautifully, and a bit of myself started shining again with each stroke of the steel brush.
