Why People Hate Reality TV

Technology has showered humanity with all sorts of gifts and for the most part, we have used them pretty well to enhance our lives and do things that are casual to us but would appear like magic to a caveman.

There are however, several cases where we have gotten carried away with our use of these technologies so much that it has resulted in something that would even give the inventors of said technologies nightmares!

Take the television for example. It must have been such a revolutionary new technology of its time where you could see and hear people from across the globe inside a box! No wonder it quickly became a very popular medium of spreading information.

As we almost always do, we quickly turned the TV into a source of entertainment which was well and good….. until reality shows started showing up! I am not saying they are all bad, but boy are there a lot of bad ones and it seems like now, most people simply hate them. I think, rather hope, that you do too. If you don’t, stay tuned and you just might!

1. It’s All Fake

1.jpg

It’s ironical that reality shows are fake! Although these shows are all about the real lives of real people, let me tell you, that these are still shows and these still have to ‘sell’.

Therefore, they are mostly scripted and acted and extremely exploitative to serve the greater need of making the show successful. I mean, there are now story editors in reality shows. Why would you want a ‘story’ editor where you’d expect ‘reality’?

That’s because they show what they want to show. They have hours upon hours of tape for a single episode and they can change the narrative as per their wishes.

We all know that nowadays, its all about the show ratings. They will do absolutely whatever it is that will get the ratings to go higher even as far as creating scandals. The whole thing just wreaks of fakeness. Of course not every single one is like that but enough of them are for people to generalise.

2. Oh, The Drama!

2.jpg

This must be the number one thing that is common across most reality shows. Be it singing and dancing shows where there is always that one arrogant and pompous judge creating drama for everybody or other shows where the participants live together. There is always so much drama.

But it might not be the fault of the show producers. Us humans consider such chaos entertainment these days and so, that’s what they’ll try to create for us! In fact most dramas are manufactured just to satisfy the viewers at home, which is ok to a point until they start getting abusive.

Then there is something called ‘schadenfreude’ which permeates a lot of the reality TV. It means pleasure derived from someone else’s misfortunes. Yes, right now, you might be thinking, “who would want to see such a thing?”

But think again. Shows like Fear Factor, Wipeout, Big Brother all show people getting humiliated and embarrassed and for some reason, people like watching it!

3. Bad Social Consequences

3.jpg

The youth is pretty impressionable and if they watch the kind of garbage that they show these days, it will heavily impact their behaviour. No wonder many of them act out because they think it is ok to do so, just because some douche on a tv show did it!

They make people want the glamour life and to be popular so that everyone will like them. And in today’s world, where everyone is seeking validation and affection, reality shows simply augment that and it creates an entire generation of spotlight hungry people.

I am not saying that it is bad but trying to become famous just for the sake of being famous is just not done. And we all know the kind of lives these celebrities live where they appear happy from the outside but are often unfulfilled on the inside.

Needless to say reality shows that portray nudity, violence, drug and alcohol use have bad social consequences. If you think you can monitor what your children are watching, I will just say that this is the age of internet!

4. Talent Is No More A Requirement

4.jpg

Yes, many shows still respect true talent and they judge people based solely on that. Therefore, thanks to many of these show, some really talented people get the spotlight they deserve and many people manage to make careers out of it.

Things have taken a turn for the worst these days though. How many times have you seen people with no talent or mediocre talent become superstars while the really talented people do not even get noticed.

Just recently there was this 14 year old girl named Danielle Bregoli who appeared on the Dr. Phil show and today she is set to be a millionaire. You know why? Just because she said this statement, “Cash me ousside, how ‘bout dah?” and it became an internet meme!! Can you believe it?

Also, can someone please explain to me why the Kardashians are popular again? I mean we all know why, but really….. why???

People do like reality TV. This blog is more of a personal opinion and not a broad general statement. These shows make money, have viewers, and are entertaining. If you don't like them don't watch them.

I do not think he is focusing on the money been Made from them, but the Value been added to those who spend time watching.

So he's just implying that I am morally inferior for my choice in television show? What an absurd position to take. If you don't enjoy reality TV that's fine. But to imply I made a poor life choice by watching the voice is ridiculous.

I am not implying that at all!! LOL

That is the same thing I was just trying to explain. You have made the difference clear enough.

If you don't like them don't watch them.

i don't. but they are shoved down the throats of our youth. mtv was the first place i saw it. and then it was on all the time and they stopped music videos. i left at that time. but many new, upcoming kids, without the benefit of past experience, got sucked into the drama. and many of them thought it was real, that is what made it good.

so therefor, it was 'good' on false pretenses. had they known it was all setup, like a sitcom, it would lose it allure, as most of the reality shows are really quite dry and poorly scripted compared a sitcom with actual jokes and comedy... but it was 'real' so the lesser quality was accepted.

even today, while the fact that reality tv is fake may be common knowledge amongst many people, there are many that think it is real.

You are right that they are masters of marketing and a lot of these shows are shoved down our throats and especially the teenagers who are easily manipulated into watching. Granted, at the end of the day, we all have a choice not to watch, but the magic of marketing is really strong.

I'm quite confident 'our youth' are wasting their time on other honorable endeavours like memeing and the YouTube's. There are so many worse things for people to be exposed to than bad tv.

Yes, they do make money, have viewers (in the millions) but when you compare it to the number of people that do no watch them, it becomes clear that many people don't like them. In any case, yes, it was a broad general statement on my part.

Dear Sauravrungta, great post ,
our young generation is wasting time on excess use of every thing specially related to modern technology. so misusing or excess of everything is bad.
so I agree with u that using technology is not bad but misusing is bad.

Thank you. Yes, a lot of time is being wasted on it.

You are absolutely Correct @hamzayousaf, I won't exclude myself from been among this Young generation also, I am more of the same view with you because a lot of my peers waste excess time on it.

thanks dear

Good points! I think most of reality TV can be better described as reality based TV. Its similar to the difference between natural and organic foods.

Depending on your age, you might remember the first true reality based TV show..... WWF. Lets be honest, thats exactly what it is, scripted stuff to act real. We all KNEW it was fake, but it was so damn entertaining!!! No one cares to watch reality unless its been boosted with script to make it more interesting, otherwise I would just film myself and....oh wait thats called a vlog. :P

WWF is a perfect example. I used to think it was real until I found out it was actually scripted, but still pretty fun to watch!! hehe

i think i found it less interesting when i realized the truth.

Thank you for sharing dear it is amazing and information for every one.really helpful post for us
keep it up.

Thanks for reading!

i didn't know that people hate it. Actually, tv audience measurement shows people love it

Yes, they do have millions of viewers but compare it to hundreds of millions that do not watch them. I think people are increasingly starting to hate these things, or at least that's what I have observed.

I think your title should read "Why People Should Hate Reality TV"...unfortunately...if it didn't get ratings...they wouldn't stay on...

My wife has tried to get me into one she's been watching for about 18 years...she claims its a number one rated show...on for many weeks at a time...as a "gift"...I watched a few of the last episodes...I learned not to poke fun at it...or scoff at it...pretended I was interested...but...one series would be more than enough for me...

Oh well...as I realize more and more...I'm the one who's different...

hehe, yeah, friends and families try to make us watch these as well. I guess I'm the one who's different as well!

Its so boring to death. It is more fun to watch the home cctv than the boring reality TV show.

hahahh home cctc? really? :P :P

Like most things on mainstream media, the reality shows are absolutely terrible. I remember watching the first ever big brother in Bulgaria - it was fun at the beginning but then it quickly turned into utter garbage. Then, I moved to Denmark and stopped watching TV at all. That is my advice to all of you that still watch television: get rid of your TV - it's liberating :)

Thanks for writing this piece @sauravrungta.

Oh yes, even we have big brother here and initially it was good but then with time, their creativity seems to go down and they start trying to overdo things and then it becomes total garbage, as you say.

Upvoted and RESTEEMED!

Thanks! :)

I just generally prefer to spend my time doing something where at the end of it I feel like I'm a bit further towards where I want to be, and not to spend my time doing something where at the end of it I wonder where the hell my time went.

That's exactly what I like doing as well!! :D :D

The most annoying thing for me - in most tv shows is showing responses of other people, especially jury, like I would be someone not able to think myself.

haha I know right!!

Well done! For reals.

Thanks :)

I don't watch regular TV nowadays, most of my viewing is either movies or YouTube.

Mine too. And that's increasingly becoming the trend!

I was casted for a reality TV show long ago once.

I asked them, are events inside scripted?

They told me no, but they'd always make suggestions to you, like "Hey, how about you walk around topless in the house?"

Stuff like that. Oh and yes, it was a Jersey Shore-like reality show, so it'd have been pretty douchey lol.

Yeah, a lot of manipulation going on to show the story they want to.

I guess it's kind of legit still.

It's full of irrelevant verbal in dramatical drivel, just like the 24 hour news channels these days.

Totally!!

This is why I don't watch TV at all! LOL
