Dementia Village Opening In Canada @senseicat

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

A brand new village is being constructed in British Columbia for senior citizens diagnosed with dementia Canadian residents are becoming more and more excited over the construction of a new village in British Columbia. Dozens of cottages will accommodate 72 dementia patients.

The objective behind this village is for patients to feel a sense of independence and giving them a sense of freedom and space, rather than "running into a locked door."

Studies illustrate the importance of people being connected to nature and the great outdoors.

The Netherlands is actually the inspiration, as it developed the very first dementia community equipped with stores, restaurants, and gardens.

It would be wonderful if the government will help pay for some of the costs related to this village.

Excellent idea. The best thing for these patients is to try to lead a "normal" life as much as possible, attend meetings, share in public spaces, etc. Greetings from Venezuela

Nice post! My late grandma has lived the last years of her life in the first dementia village, which is in the Netherlands. It's great, all the patients need less medication, they are happier and healthier as well. Great that Canada is going to do it as well!

Also, this village was not more expensive than other elderly homes in the Netherlands, so not something exclusive. That is because it was built on very cheap ground (in the end it does not matter where it is anyway, for the inhabitants will never leave this village). And because the whole architecture is so functional and efficient like adjacent houses which each are inhabited by 6-12 people, so one or two staff members can easily walk from one house to the next. Therefore they need less staff at night or weekends, which also declines the costs of the overall care.
