Poverty Among Immense Natural Beauty @senseicat

Yesterday, we drove home from Mexico and the evidence of poverty was sadly everywhere. The majority of the homes looked similar to these photos and some, even far worse conditions.

The potholes in the streets were numerous and I kept commenting how fortunate it is that my old tires with virtually no tread survived the trip. Aside, from being a road hazard, potholes are simply dangerous and wreck havoc on overworked cars.

As we were driving in extreme heat, in the comfort of the air conditioning, we saw many people walking great distances by foot with no end in sight.

It was interesting to see so many young people, all appearing to be clean cut, living in makeshift neighborhoods without simple enclosures to their homes.

I remarked many times at how absolutely beautiful the landscape is in Mexico and the Gulf is amazing. San Carlos is definitely the most gentrified of the cities that we passed through.

The most striking image is the sheer amount of litter everywhere in Mexico.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. When you travel, it is much more interesting to leave the tourist areas and spend time with the locals. We were fortunate to have found a "local" beach and see everyone enjoying their families over the weekend.

The moment that we crossed the border to the United States, the first thing we noticed and appreciated was the cleanliness.

I have travelled many times to various tourist locations in Mexico and often it is a way to be sheltered from the realities of life for Mexicans.

Travel is about opening your mind, experiencing a different culture, and I realize how insulated that I have been with only glimpses into the sheer magnitude of poverty that people experience.
