Chani Rubin's life was turned upside down. Her husband was convicted and sent to prison for white-collar crimes. How do you go from living a seemingly idyllic life, to visiting your husband in prison?
Chani decided to write down her feelings in order to get them out. Until that time, not many people knew what was going on in her life, but suddenly LOTS of people knew. Her blog posts were getting 30,000+ views.
What started out as a relief, as a way of getting things off her chest, became a burden. The feeling that she had to keep putting out posts to satisfy her audience, and even worse, hateful comments toward her and her family members that had nothing to do with any of this.
Chani made the decision to step back from the blog. She made the decision not only for her own good, but the good of her family as well. She said what she had needed to say and it got her through it. It was time to put the blog to bed.
What started out as an exercise in self-help had become more of a burden that a help. It must have been an easy decision, yet at the same time a tough decision to kill something that was so popular. In the end, it came down to the fact that while Chani herself could take the abuse, she couldn't see her family attacked.
What I learned from my talk with Chani was that you can have too much of a good thing, and once something that was supposed to help you becomes a hinderance, it's time to put it bed. Sometimes we hang on to people, jobs, and possessions that we feel we should hang on to despite the fact that they are hurting us. It's ok to let go.
