The Dying Embers That Still Warm

in life •  7 years ago

'Even as darkness engulfs at sunset, the sky is filled with stars invisible by day' ~ Henry Wordsworth Longfellow

Tonight I met a woman who is dying; she seemed weak and frail, with sad eyes that spoke more than she could find the strength to. I stood at her bedside, lost for words, trying to make small talk with her daughter Misiko and Doris, but it was awkward…

My mind flashed back 6 years ago when I stared at that same look in my father's eyes- the look of one who is exhausted from running the final mile in life's long race; the look of one who knows that she has fought with all the fight she had left... She made us laugh, and found the strength to warm our hearts with a smile.

To those who have fought the good fight, and finished the race life laid before us; we who are still running salute you.
