Introduction
In the intro to biology video, Biology was define as the branch of science concerned with the study of living things, or organisms. The definition was very straightforward. Though the definition of biology in the video open doors to more interesting and difficult questions….like
• What is life?
• When does it mean to be alive?
You and I are alive. The animals too are alive, the tree too is alive, and the snow that falls from the cloud is not alive. The computer and other accessories which we are using today are not alive, the chairs and table we are using today were woods and were once alive. So what is life then…..?
What is it that defines life? How can we differentiate if one or the other thing is alive or not? Most people have an intuitive understanding and believe on what it means to be alive. However, it’s surprisingly hard to come up with a precise definition of life. There are many definitions because of this, many definitions that allows us to separate between living and non-living things. To make this separation, we must come up with a list of properties that are, as a group, uniquely characteristic of living organisms.
Properties of life
Biologists have discovered different traits which are common in all the living organisms which we all know. Though non-living things do show some of this characters but only living things exhibit all of them.

1. Organization
   When we talk about organization, living things are very organized, all living organisms are made up of different cells, which are examined to be fundamental units of life. Every cells in the living organism performs complex biochemical processes which are needed to maintain the structure and function of each organism.
   Unicellular organisms consist of only a single cell, while multicellular organisms, humans is an example of multicellular; they are made up of many cells. The cells present in the multicellular organisms are specialized to perform different jobs and are categorized into tissues, such as nervous tissue, epithelial tissue, connective tissue and muscle. Tissues make up organs, such as the lungs or heart, which carry out different functions that is needed by the organism as a whole to function.

1. Metabolism
   Life depends on an extensive number of interlocking an inter switching of different chemical reactions. These reactions made it possible for all the organisms to perform their duties such as catching prey, reproducing, maintaining structure, moving around as well as growing. Living things must consume nutrient and use energy to perform the chemical reaction and sustain life. Metabolism.

2. Homeostasis
   Living organisms controls their inner environment to maintain a stable relatively narrow range for their cell function. For instance, your body temp. needs to remain at 98.6degreeF (37degreeC).

3. Reproduction
   Living organisms reproduces to produce new organisms. Reproduction can be either sexual that is involving two parents or asexual requiring just one parent.

1. Response
   Living organisms show (irritability), which means that they respond to stimuli and changes in their various environment. For instance, unicellular organisms also migrate from harmful chemical and move towards a source for nutrients; plants turning towards the sun.

2. Evolution
   The standard of living organisms may undergo evolution, which means that the genetic standard of a Population can change overtime. Evolution means natural selection in some cases, organisms reproduce and survive better in a particular environment they find their self in due to the heritable trait. The process of them surviving in the environment means adaptation.
