Things could easily have turned out worse than it was but for some reason -- definitely supernatural -- I came out unscathed.
It seemed just like a scene out of one of those 1999 blockbuster movies, I remember seeing a flash of light from the headlamps of an oncoming car moving at least 40mph/65kmph, and then a traumatizing loud BANG!!.
You see, we were returning from my mum's 60th birthday celebration with some family in the car. My two Aunties, grandma and my 3 years old cousin. A beautiful celebration with lots of food to eat and drinks too.
It was almost a 200 mile long road trip and we were about 5 hours through it, almost 9:30pm and just over a mile till we got home. We were driving in a convoy of three cars and a truck and I was the DD (Designated Driver) in one vehicle so no drinks for me (just putting that out there).
SUDDENLY, I see the headlamps, the jolt of the impact and the crashing sound, four airbags deploy and then white (almost blue) thick fumes start gushing out from the vents. It smelled like burning engine oil with a hint of gas (PMS). For a split second my first thought was, "when will I begin to feel the pain?", I knew something must have happened to me and i was probably injured. To my surprise, I was OK. I looked at my cousin at the back seat, and HE WAS STILL SLEEPING!!! Everyone else seemed conscious and uninjured.
Then came the battle to get out of the car filling up with thick fumes, people already gathered around including my family from the other cars in the convoy but the doors were jammed and could not open (whats with that anyway? Why do doors jam when you need them the most?). I tried to break the window so i could crawl out to no avail but finally I was able to get out through the passenger side window.
That was when the whole situation became clear and the cause of the crash was realized. The driver of the other vehicle was driving under the influence. Everyone could smell the stench of alcohol from his breath. Though he looked fine with no visible injuries, his car which clipped the front left side of my car, removing the whole axle, was totaled as it flipped over.
I remember seeing EVERYTHING that took place in slow motion just right before it happened. I am still surprised how we all got out safe but I am thankful we get to live another day.
AVOID DRIVING WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE AT ALL COSTS.
Stay Safe for yourself and others!
