No Durian? Forbidden Fruit In Almost Every Hotel

in life •  7 years ago

I have been to Thailand a few times now but this time, I discovered a sign in almost every hotel which made me curious. There is written NO DURIAN otherwise you need to pay a fee for at least 2000 Baht which are around 50€.  Wait... Such a high fee for a forbidden fruit? I found this sign especially in escalators and it hang in my last hotel room as well. But why is a fruit forbidden...?

I had no idea what this green thing, big like a watermelon with spines was but you can find it in every fruit or street market. I thought it´s just a popular Asian fruit but it turned out to be ore than this.

The durian (/ˈdjʊəriən/) or /ˈdʊriən/[2] is the fruit of several tree species belonging to the genus Durio. There are 30 recognised Durio species, at least nine of which produce edible fruit, and over 300 named varieties in Thailand, 102 in Indonesia,[3] and 100 in Malaysia.[4] Durio zibethinus is the only species available in the international market: other species are sold in their local regions.Regarded by many people in Southeast Asia as the "king of fruits",[5] the durian is distinctive for its large size, strong odour, and formidable thorn-covered rind. The fruit can grow as large as 30 centimetres (12 in) long and 15 centimetres (6 in) in diameter, and it typically weighs one to three kilograms (2 to 7 lb). Its shape ranges from oblong to round, the colour of its husk green to brown, and its flesh pale yellow to red, depending on the species.

I honestly never tried this fruit but I heard that some people regard the durian as having a pleasantly sweet fragrance, whereby others find the aroma overpowering in an unpleasant way. It has been described variously as rotten onions, turpentine , and raw sewage. I really can not imagine to eat something that should smell that disgusting. The smell must be very persistent otherwise it makes no sense for me to prohibit this kind of food. I was curious so I searched for this specific question online and found this...

The persistence of its odour, which may linger for several days, has led to the fruit's banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia.

I am thinking about to try it even once because people seem to be obsessed with Durians since you can see fresh ones in every Fruit/Street market and even the most common supermarkets sell Durian chips...

I am a person who gets affected by smells very easily. I can not stay at a place where the scent is not nice or where I feel uncomfortable.

I just switched Hotels and it took years to finally get into my room. After arriving and unpacking, I decided to get some stuff done at the rooftop pool and go out to the gym. Then it suddenly started to pour from the sky like an apocalypse which made it very difficult for me to film some shots for a new video. Then I saw a sign that says  No Durian in my room and I eventually started researching about it.

Have you ever tried a Durian fruit?

This is the first time I am hearing about this fruit. This really looks quite strange. If it has many health benefits, I can even try it.

The fruit does not look nice, I do not like it, I would not eat it although it is interesting to know what is eaten in other places.
The people who consume it are already familiar with its appearance and taste, so for them it must be great to eat this fruit.

I can see, you are not attracted to this fruit at all! I have seen Durian all over the markets and I´m curious how it tastes but the bad smell is definitely a no go for me

really intresting to listen about it and a big fee is make it more intresting i also not tried this fruit still @soldier and if i say true i am seeing it first time

Its very common in Asia but I dont think it´s very popular in other places around the world. It looks very interesting but too many people now said in the comments that it does not only smell like stinky feet, it should also taste like it ....

This fruit seems nice. And @soldier you must give it a try.
Nice article on interesting fruit.

Have you tried it? I am curious but the bad smell is what stops me...

Looks like a dangerous fruit just by looking at it lol. How’s ur trip going !!

Yes it definitely does look dangerous! Oh hun, its been amazing! The weather is just too nice (except the rainy moments) but its still over 30 degrees every day, the food is good, the people are nice and I have a decent internet connection. I hope you are able to travel with your little one very soon and I´ll let you know when I´m in New York! Have a great day sweetheart

I've heard of Durian and know that they are indeed shunned in some places. But something in the back of my mind also tells me that these may be one of those fruits that could be poisonous if eaten wrong. Not entirely sure though, but worth researching before you eat it!

I´ve read to many negative comments about it! Some say it also tastes bad, you say it might be poisonous... Oh no, not for me :D Its better to just take a look at it instead of eating

She looks like a beautiful fruit

The fruit is also very big

One of my teachers in m culinary school was OBSESSED with durian, unfortunately. And she made us all try it - let’s just say you’re not missing anything. Smells and tastes like stinky feet lol

As my wife @missmau is partly Indonesian I have had several encounters with this 'Stinky' fruit. But as her grandfather alwasy said about this fruit: "It smells like hell but tastes like heaven!"

I tried it but didn't like it myself. That was for the pure fruit part. But "Ice Durian" basically ice cream with durian flavor is one of my favorite ice creams. You could start with trying the ice version of this fruit.

Thanks for the tip, I will definitely try the ice cream!!!

I heard that fruit has a awful flavor, it's like at rotten meat and dirty socks no too much tasty hehehe. Regards

It should also taste bad? Oh no, then I wont try this! Why do people eat this fruit????

Maybe because by culture and they start to eat it in their early life

Yes I tried it before (of course as an Asian :P). I´m one of those who can´t handle the taste haha But maybe you can give it try. I know it is super healthy for skin and hair

If you can not eat it, then I am definitely the wrong person who should try it :D! Maybe only the ice cream flavor lol

numerous an abundance of thanks for sharing an accommodating data mam

I have actually never seen this fruit before.
Looks very special.
Would be interesting to try it out :P
It looks very tropical

I've had it.
It's so confusing because it smells so bad, but tastes so nice. I literally can't think of anything else that tastes so much better than it smells.

I'm not surprised that it's banned in hotels... the older the fruit gets, the worse it smells and the smell just lingers. ..

nice share

Thanks For sharing with us @soldier Good Blog

Oh durians are forbidden in buses, trains and clubs here. Cause they stink.

interesting to know about Durian i haven't seen it yet

i would not like to eat that definitely but thanks for sharing about that

wow this is kind of very interesting stuff i was not aware about it

looking very different let it remain ban hahah we have apples ;)

That's quite the reason behind this i would carry this some day haha and would see the reaction of their faces lol

even if it is given to me i think i will not eat that lol otherwise it will poke me

i never saw that sign at any hotel don't know why but thanks for sharing this thing

nice discovery while travelling ;)

overpowering fruit now i got to find this one hhaha

this seems to be a very rare thing to see also great post you just shared

Interesting; but never tried, so not knowing about the taste or smell. But when I have to believe the “story” it wont be my favourite to try.
Then I prefer Jasmin 😉😉

Its hard to find good durian but its worth to go on that journey. I have friends who literally dedicate a big part of their life to finding and even growing good durian. The ones in Thailand are not that good compared to the ones in Malaysia or the Philippines. I had the best ones so far in Davao City, also called "Durian City"(you can really read that on the taxis and there are golden durian statues). When you catch a good one its a creamy, soft, sweet custard like texture with a hint of vanilla etc. It really depends on the variety, there are so many different ones. My friends even sometimes compare it to white nougat or cheesecake flavor so definitely the king of fruits! :)

Durian is delicious. Great for eating, better for trolling. Nothing beats offering someone a durian drink and watching their reaction.
