Why Sense of Smells can trigger Strong Memories

in life •  7 years ago

Do you know the feeling when you smell a perfume which you wore years ago or you use a shampoo which your mother used to wash your hair with when you were little and this smell brings back old memories ?

I realized that a few weeks ago I smelt something which I smelt before….

I had a trip to L.A. where I bought a nice curl shampoo smelling like hibiscus and coconut. When I opened the bottle at home I saw the bathroom from California around me and thought about all the nice things that happened to me at that time. I also remember that I bought a nice perfume in Dubai while I was waiting for my connecting flight to Thailand. I wore it every night when we went out for dinner and I have so many great memories from that time. These two smells represent two of my best moments I had in my life….

Today I visited one of my best friends @mrs.steemit . I told her that I want to right about this topic tonight and a few moments later she made her signature hot tea…  While she put fresh basil into the drink, she smelt on the plant and said „Oh this smell always reminds me of Spain“… A few seconds later she said „This is exactly what you want to write about! It brought my memories back!“

And yes it´s true

The sense of smell can bring back memories even if you forgot about them!

It´s known as „odor-evoked autobiographical memory“ or the „Proust phenomenon“ named after the french writer Marcel Proust. The storyteller of his famous novel In Search Of Lost Time dipped a Madeleine cookie into a cup of tea and this transported him back into the time of his childhood.

Research shows that odors are especially effective as reminders of past experience, much more than cues from other senses, such as sounds or sights. This might has to do with how your brain processes odors and memories.

Smells get routed through your olfactory bulb, which the smell-analyzing region in your brain. It’s closely connected to your amygdala and hippocampus, brain regions that handle memory and emotion.

The close connection may explain why a scent might get tied to vivid memories in your brain, and then come flooding back when you’re exposed to that particular odor trigger. As noted by Psychology Today.

“Interestingly, visual, auditory (sound), and tactile (touch) information do not pass through these brain areas. This may be why olfaction, more than any other sense, is so successful at triggering emotions and memories.”

 By Dr. Mercola

I believe that the smell instinct is one of the most important instincts of humans and animals. It brings not only great memories back, it also protects you from dangerous situations, it tells you what you can eat, it can change your mood into happy or sad and it has many other benefits.

The psychological impact of smell loss

The sense of smell clearly plays an important part in our psychological make-up which I mentioned above. Its one of the five ways how we connect with the world, the people, the nature around us. Its absence can have a profound impact. Anosmia suffers often talk of feeling isolated and cut-off from the world around them. Its so hard to imagine not smelling anything anymore. Not being able to smell your partner, blossomed flowers, fresh baked bred, roasted coffee beans, fresh laundry and everything we do not appreciate in our daily lives anymore. Smell loss can effect close personal relationships and can lead to depressions as well. A very important issue is that smell loss is invisible. Unless a patient tells you about it, you are never able to see who is suffering from Anosmia which is the reason why it never received much attention.

So, our fifth sense is more important as you may think! I want you to wake up tomorrow and appreciate everything you are able to smell. If you have someone who cooks for you, try to guess which dish will come to the table. Or take a walk outside and smell different plants in the nature.

This us amazing.

That our sense of smell can be so important, and its loss so impactfull, always makes me think.

Especially given the recent research thats proven our sense of smell is in no way inferior to that of dogs. Its just mostly unconscious

I read that also !

Hello my dear friend , new day , new great post from you, cheers darling :)

This is so relatable. I always get that if I put on a cologne that I did not use for a prolonged period of time. Then I usually get flashbacks from the time period when I used the cologne actively. I still have my sense of smell, but definitely understand that it can be terrible to lose it.

Yeah I am scared to imagine not having this sense anymore... thanks for your opinion :)

Thank you for sharing! Nice post. I do agree that smell can trigger deep memories because I personally have experienced it before. I remember I used to love my grandfather's noodle soup, he had his own recipe and no one, not even my mom could remake his noodle soup. But once in an authentic Sichuan, restaurant, I smell something really similar which made me cried coz it reminds me of my grandfather 's noodle soup

Wow nice story! Thanks for sharing

The beautiful flowers I've been posting have been smelling fantastic!!

Nice !

@soldier - Thank you for this. As a 9/11 responder at Ground Zero in NYC, I know what you mean. I can still smell it more than fifteen years later. It never goes away (especially when I first wake up), and it triggers the most awful memories of of the war at home and human carnage.

Oh thats a bad memory. I hope you still have good memories though.

Yes I do! :-)

Sense of smells can trigger bad memories too, if u know what i mean...

Yes thats right... It always has a good and a bad side

How do we figure out a way to be able to transmit smells and aromas via the internet? Take the smell, break it down to 1's and 0's, transmit the code, and replicate on the other end? How much more intense would that make watching a movie or reading a book?

Wow what an idea! I would love to send over scents !!!!

Thanks for sharing. Following you now... Feel free to connect with me @lulita

Appreciate it thank you!!

My pleasure

Great post!
Its so wild how smell can bring you back.
Every time I smell cigarettes, it reminds me of when I use to work construction... eeewww :P

I hate cigarettes and their smell 🤢....

yeah! They are one of the worse things in the world...
I am so glad I am not around them anymore!

Great job its just like when you smell something that remind you of home, for one second your brought back to a specific time and place, our MIND works wonders, such a great topic I could discus for a while! GREAT POST! will follow and resteem!

Thank you a lot !! Appreciate it !

I love aromatherapy. The smell of jasmine brings me back to a simpler time in my life.

I never tried an aromatherapy ! Thanks for the tip

Yes the sense of smell. That smell is pegged to memories. I remember the smell of mom's baked bread. As a kid I would ride my bike for a while then come in and ask mom if it was done yet. I would go out again the ride the bike for longer the come back in again and ask the same thing. Mom, No not yet go ride your bike a little longer. This would go on and on. Finally the bread is done. I could remember really working hard at staying on my bike and getting sweaty. It was all worth it to get that fresh bread. I haven't thought about that riding my bike as a way of waiting for that bread in decades.

Such a nice story and a great memory ! Thanks for sharing !!!

Last week I had the flu. Was a horrible week for me, couldn't taste the food as smell and taste is associated. Smell sense definitely makes life better.

Sure it does! When I get really sick, I am disabled to taste and smell anything! Its always a horrible time, so I understand what you mean

I believe only the smell of snacks I ate when I was younger can only awaken my childhood memories! XD

Haha try out some other smells like shampoo or detergents your mother used. Maybe you will get some childhood memories :P

There are certain smells that take me back in time to a specific place. Also certain songs do that for me. It is like stepping into a time machine!

Yes you´re right, music does the same. I also did a post about music...

It's a unique emotion, arguably stronger or deeper than mere nostalgia for me. Something long past, but invaluable if only because it was my experience for a time.

I love that you quote Dr. Mercola for this. A beloved employer of mine at Herbs of Light was friends with him, and taught me a lot in the short time I was able to work with him.

wow really? I would love to read more about his work

Dr. Mercola is very prominent in various mediums, especially via internet. I take it as a great suggestion for an article, though. Regarding my previous employer who worked with him from time to time, his name is Dean Martin (not the famous host, but maybe just as old ;p )

Dean founded Herbs of Light in Florida after fighting of numerous illnesses. I feel his personal nemesis is Lyme disease, which he has worked at length to help people battle or even cure. He's a very intelligent, visionary man, and I wonder what it must have been like to work with him in his slightly younger years. The website for the company is a good overview of many things and springboard for researching natural cures. The office appreciates calls from people wanting to know more. One point I admired about them as opposed to orthodox pharmaceuticals is they encourage awareness and understanding of conditions, options, and lifestyle changes. The herbs and blends are effective, but they're only part of the equation. https://www.herbsoflight.com/

Wow thanks so much I will definitely check out their webpage ! I am so interested on herbs and their cure

I know it happens to me each time I walk in a Starbucks.... ;-)

I love the smell of fresh roasted coffee beans although I am not a coffee drinker

I know it does something....chemically perhaps?

smell really was amazing sense....it can influence our emotions....

True !

but I prefer nature aroma.... that chemical aroma.... :)

Natural is always the best :)

indeed....

Let's not forget the first liquor that almost killed us as kidults! Whiskey was mine. shiver-but-oh-so-smooth-now

haha. I dont drink any alcohol so I dont remember a liquor that almost killed me xD

Consider yourself lucky!

I do :)

very nice post.

Thanks really appreciate it

The fragrance "Cool Water" takes me back to a girlfriend from long ago and the bittersweet memories of that time in my life.

I hope more sweet than bitter! Thanks for sharing your memory :)

Every so many years I angel something that takes me back to the very first time I smelled it and how I felt, thanks for the article brings back fantastic memories. Hasn't happened in a while

Glad you liked it !

As a psychology graduate I love thinking about things like this!

Interesting research has found that if you wear the same, unique scent when you are studying and in an exam you're more likely to remember what you studied!!

wow nice to know! Thanks for sharing

Very cool. A subject I probably would never have thought of. Thanks for the info. When I taste it's kinda the same thing.

Try to smell different things you never smelt before !

interesting. lll have to go to the asian market or something.. but if you haven't smelled something before?! I'm almost 4 decades old.. how many variations can there be? Like the colour spectrum?! You would really have to hone your senses like for wine or scotch.

You´re so right. Asian market sounds nice.

fir tree smell always reminds me of how we as a children dressed up Christmas tree at home with our mother.

Nice memory !!!

I have always wondered about this considering all the memories I have with smelling things! Thanks for sharing this, I will resteem it as well! :)

Thank you! I really appreciate your support !

Interesting and fascinating at the same time. I wonder how many memories I have attached to scents. Well written and informative as always :)

Thanks for your feedback! Glad you liked it and it would be great to know how many we have attached to scents !

Instant time travel! The combination of the smell of cotton candy & whatever oil they used to make it, always brings me back to a very special place. Also many people have their own body scent. I loved my grandma's scent. Just so warm and loving. Music teleports us in mood, scent teleports us in time. Great post!

Funny that i always though i was some kind of "Dejavu", when i sense a smell and it remained me of the pass. But from reading this i understand more that your body, mind and soul is such a complex creation.Thank you for your interesting post !

Actually i knew it, also there is an chatting app where you can actually send smells but it needs olfactory sensors.

Interesting article. I once had a person who told me an interesting "tactic" for school tests and exams. She claimed that her strategy was using different scents as memory aids.

I have never tried this and I could never imagine how someone could implement this in school tests and exams. It sounds kind of crazy to me.
