First thing you would need to do is shutting the power off to the A/c unit. Which is done by removing the disconect or pulling down the lever. For extra safety measures flipping the breaker to off position the breaker box is best.
Check return air filter. If dirty, it will need to be replaced as soon as possible.
Having a dirty air filter restricts air flow through the evaporator coil and cause costly repairs if left this way.
Go to the condenser part of the unit and remove any debri that might be on the coil nothing should be sitting on top of the unit or the fan.
Then you should wash the condenser coil. Recommand spraying it down with a coil cleaner.
Let cleaner sit and remove any dirt/dust that maybe on coil.
Finally rinse off coil and start up unit.
By doing this you will end up saving on electric bill by keeping efficiency on your a/c unit and minimizing repairs.
Recommend replacing air filter monthly and cleaning the conderser at least twice a year especially if you have a heat pump unit even during winter time a little bit of debri like dead leaves in the condenser can affect the unit when calling for heat.
