Free Byteball Airdrops Allegedly Coming at Costly Price for Steemians

Wow. There’s something about the word free that automatically causes my antennae to rise.

Maybe it’s because the double e’s make the same long e sound as greed, stretch it out, greedy.

Or, maybe because it causes people to confuse the double e in need as, stretch it out, needy.

So, when the recent frenzy to buy, sorry, get for free the altcoin BYTEBALL, I could only smh at the thought of bothering to become a part of it.

I mean, it just reminded me in a weird way of all the other defunct, pump up the volume assets that blew up, only to deflate into nothingness.

When offered to buy in, sorry, jump in for free, I was reminded what happens when things are given for free. At some point, I’m reminded there’s an underlying motive; because, rarely, if ever, things are given for free.

Perhaps, I’m being cynical; or just honest. Nothing in this life is really free. There’s always a price tag that comes due, or as some would say, junk, aka, clutter in the Wallet.

It seems my spirit was in proper tune when I declined the offer to receive my free tokens. It was something about the tech-word byte being related to computer MEMORY; and the word byte also reminding me of bite, as in, a lure which fish bite into, only to be had, for dinner that is. I'm reminded that a whole lot of data was collected for those signing up to receive their droppings...ahem...drops.

Jmho.

Best regards.

Peace.

The motive is to get more users/and free promotion. It basically a marketing stunt that costs them nothing. Byteballs ain't a blockchain instead it a DAG. DAG have to be premined. This steem airdrop is a distribution of the coins. They did it before aka airdropping to bitcoin holders

Oh @sames, rest assured, I'm familiar with airdrops. I think they're a great marketing tool; however, in this case it became an opportunity for people to just get ridiculous with their greediness. There are some 'shocking' posts revealing how people just took scamming to a whole other level by opening up 'grab the free byteball' accounts, in some cases hundreds of bogus accounts.

Someone suggested Steemit implementing a captcha to prevent these types of abuses. No, the air drops are a good thing; but, leaving a wide open door to people who see an easy way to milk the system, ruins it for me, and from the sounds of it, prolly quite a few others as well.

Btw, I have a couple of airdrops placed in my Wallet without request, and they are quietly setting there, pretty much, defunct.

It's all a part of crypto I suppose. Most took their free and reinvested it. Perhaps, they're the wise ones. I simply like to invest in more 'stable/proven' assets; and, it shall be interesting to see if this is just another one that 'bytes' the dust.

Off topic; but speaking of Wallet, it seems OpenLedger is having issues; hopefully temporary.

Best regards!

I'm so looking forward to the start of the Sabbath. If God says the same, I will check back in a day or so.

Peace.
