The Bicycle Comic Has a Point... Just Not a Great One

in life •  7 years ago

As seen in the popular comic, "My Bike Got Stolen Recently", a boy gets his bike stolen but reasons that the theft of his bike was more happy to steal his bike than he was to have it stolen so the overall happiness in the world increased.

While it is a pleasant logic to embrace, it was brought to the extreme by many on the internet by replacing the stolen bike with a murdered loved one and many other morbid ideas. Most would say that these circumstances would invalidate the logic, but that's not the case.

An inanimate object such as a bike can only hold so much significance in one's life where the value of a loved one's life is unquantifiable. So the importance of a bike to a thief and their victim can be equal, if not greater for the thief; but the adrenaline rush of a sadist when they kill cannot even compare to the despair of the loved ones of the victim.

However, a case where such an extreme scenario resulted in greater happiness than sadness was the death of Hitler: More Jews and enemies of Nazi Germany were happy to see him dead than Nazis were to lose their leader. There is always a silver lining, it just matters if that silver pays off the damages.

Yeah, I know I overthought this but it was fun to write. Also, this is my first post so be kind.
