What Were YOUR First Seven Jobs?

in life •  8 years ago  (edited)

I'd pretty much bet none of them had anything to do with your degree or your current occupation or business.

Funny that this would come up as a trending topic on Facebook. My son's in his second year of college (sorta), and absolutely hates school.
I keep telling him it's not necessary to sit in a classroom to get the education he needs.

Of course, I don't have a whole lot of credibility there. I went to Rutgers for my undergrad (Psychology), then Gordon-Conwell for most of a Master's (Counseling), and then back to Rutgers for a second set of courses to enable me to sit for the CPA exam (man, that was a hard exam!).

... and fast-forward a couple of decades... I'm a freelance writer.

#firstsevenjobs

But, I thought it would be interesting to see what other people's journeys were like.

Here are the first seven jobs I held:

One: Counter help at Heidi's European Pastry in Englewood, Colorado.
Mmmmmm, croissants. But if you asked for a donut, we'd show you the door.

Two: Poop scooper at a veterinarian's office and kennel in Englewood, Colorado.
Oddly serene job... even with the barking. The cats were not my favorites, though. They get mean when they're not home.

Three: Receptionist and proof inspector at Princeton Corporate Graphics. PAPER CUT CITY!

Four: Temp secretary at a different office every other day throughout Princeton and Plainsboro, New Jersey.
How do I answer the phone today???

Five: Typing business in college. A dollar a page, baby.
On an electric typewriter... with paper, yo.

Six: Receptionist and then medical insurance biller at Willowdale Medical Center in Hamilton, Massachusetts.
My head still hurts.

Seven: Administrative assistant and then staff accountant at Danser, Balaam & Frank in Princeton, New Jersey.
If we've ever talked for more than 37 seconds, you know how much I hate math.

So, how about you?

Sort Order:
  1. Musician and Actor (5 years old to now)
  2. Entreprenuer (sold harmonicas at concerts when I was 12)
  3. Office Assistant
  4. Office Administrator
  5. Web and Graphic Designer
  6. Feature Film Crew Member
  7. Old Navy (2 months...) then Best Buy (1 year)

I've done a lot of things...but I landed on internet marketing. haha

Harmonica sales! That's a creative twist on the lemonade stand :)

Totally. I was quite the budding businessman as a preteen. hehe

I've only had two major jobs (everything else was just odd ways of making money or conventional).

I've been a carpet installer, and warehouse associate.

The job that I refuse to go work back in the industry ever again was a position at Wendy's.

My odd jobs include a bit of bitcoin mining, running blogs and YouTube, with the occasional lawn mowing. lol

Entrepreneurs have the most bizarre resumes on the planet. Wendy's must have been "interesting" - everyone's got that one job that they'd never, ever want to do again.

  1. Warehouse/store helper at the corner grocery store when I was about 10 years old.
  2. Pizza delivery boy for the local pizza parlor on Briggs Ave. in the Bronx 11 years old.
  3. Aluminum can collector in Puerto Rico - 12-14 years old
  4. Freelance landscaper in Puerto Rico - 15-16 years old
  5. Floor Employee Gristede's Supermarket N.Y - 18 years old
  6. Record Store Assistant Manager Puerto Rico - 19 years old
Homeless in Puerto Rico 19-20 years old
  7. Maintenance worker - Caribbean Cinemas Puerto Rico 20-23 years old

From then on it's been hard work and many more steps that have made me who I am today: A successful Father, husband, Medical Dosimetrist and Entrepreneur.

You had me at Bronx pizza, @jaysanz. That is one wild ride. Had to look up Dosimetrist - thanks for my new word of the day. Amazing how our journeys twist and turn, isn't it?

It's been one helluva ride, and I wouldn't change a minute of it. Well, maybe a minute wouldn't hurt.

  1. Ballet teacher assistant
  2. Lottery kiosk attendant
  3. Travel consultant
  4. Financial currency teller
  5. Bank teller
  6. Video library assistant
  7. Flight attendant
Oh and there are so many more, including stints of study in between.
I'm so glad I work for myself now.
