“Modern civilisation does not generate an ethical framework for human life.”
― Simon du Plock
Give me comfort, give me security, but most of all, don’t you dare ever take them away from me! What we have failed to realize is that relying on convenience is a dangerous game to play. We can get tossed away in an instant. Our American Dream can turn tomorrow inro an American nightmare. That’s what happens when you pin your whole faith on a system that does not have your best interest at heart. The stakes may be high, but our consciousness is low, and therefore it’ll keep us stuck in a state of oblivion.
Convenience is like any potentially addictive substance ; a little dose can be awesome, but take too much and you’re fucked. Sadly, instant gratification loves to call the shots which makes us love her a little too much. We’ve taught ourselves to love the easy way out. Sacrifice? Greater good? Are you for real? I want it my way all day, every day! It’s the contest of how can I get what I want, when I want it, the fastest way possible. After all, the future can’t be scary with this illusionary state of security. But if you are to take all my material possessions away from me, I’m sure it wouldn’t take long before I’d find myself in a deep state of agony. Depending on external resources and people is all fun and games until we lose our grip on them.
Valuable things have lost their value because we’ve accustomed ourselves to living lifestyles full of superficiality. Having became Wanting, Attention turned into a new form of distraction, talking gave way to texting, dating gave way to emotionless fucking, money became the host of the party, expect that all this madness only brought us more misery.
This is a great thought provoking write up. The title grabbed my attention because just yesterday I was talking to family asking that they think twice about the convenience of plastic. Something along the lines of "choose not to buy those cookies in the grocery store that are in that big plastic package." We live on the coast and get to see how the liter - a large part of which is packaging from convenience foods - turn into microplastics, which are going into our fish, and ultimately into us. Anyway, trash is just one of the evils of a convenient life, as you have outlined here.
