Like the drug dealer of society, symbolic violence perpetrates damage without ever revealing its identity. It preys on your weaknesses to ensure its success. Symbolic violence is all the more dangerous because it operates in ways that are not easily perceptible to the eye. Unlike physical violence, there is no tangible evidence of the marks it leaves on us. It works in silence so that you can’t see it, can’t hear it - yet it is impossible to escape from it because you have unconsciously internalized it.
Symbolic violence is tragic because those who make use of it conceal it - and those on whom it works its tactic have normalized it. Like the abuser and the abused, they both feed off each other’s sickness to survive. The victim rationalizes the abuse- which only reinforces the perpetrator’s sense of power and control.
Symbolic violence abides by the same rules of hedonic adaptation, hence the more we become used to something, the less attention we pay to it as time goes on. Our gradual desensitization to the state of affairs leads us to accept loads of injustices. Symbolic violence attempts to make us bleed to death - yet does it in a way so subtle that we never come to put into question its responsibility. She gets away with murder, but only because we have resigned ourselves to tolerate her.
Awe. Do you you need some #appletreehealing? :) lol
