Like crack cocaïne to the brain, anticipation takes us to the epitome of bliss. This is why withdrawal hurts so bad – reality can’t measure up to what we’ve taught our brain to become used to. Anticipation is exhilarating, I mean, how could it not be? What’s more fun than taking your mind on a trip to the most dreamy of places? Nothing can match up the thrill of creating in your mind a myriad of ecstatic scenarios. Idealizing a future that doesn’t yet exist may be comforting for the time being. And maybe that’s all we really need after all, to enjoy the high of the moment, while it lasts.
Whether it’s a vacation, a new date, the start of a new life goal, I think it is fair to say that anticipating an upcoming event is more exciting than when the fulfillment of that desire finally happens. I mean, when the chocolate cake is already in your mouth, the fun is halfway gone, isn’t? Nothing is quite as exciting as doing the day to day countdown for something that will take place in a near future. Ironically, it’s almost as if on the day of the event, we’re already there and we no longer have a something to look forward to. Ah human beings, slaves to their own dysfunctional thinking minds.
The good old days were surely not as ecstatic as our mind makes them up to be in our imagination. Our tendency to overlook the bad upon looking at our past or at our future can explain why we end up dissatisfied with life. Like a masterful magician, our mind plays tricks on us that we will never notice because of our blind spots. Instead of driving a thousand miles an hour on the highway of anticipation, maybe we ought to slow down the pace for a bit and appreciate the view that is right in front of us, waiting to be seen.
Reminds me of this song. Don't do drugs though. lol
