In the early days of love, we are given what I like to refer to as a novelty injector. The way this little guy works is that each time you use it, its capacity for inducing butterflies in your stomach diminishes. So the trick is that if you want to benefit from it as much as possible (for the longest time humanely possible), you ought not to overuse it right from the get go.

But like all new lovers in love, human beings can’t be trusted in the novelty department. Truth be told, we’re only in it for the feels that discovering a new human being brings about. And we want it for our money’s worth.

New lovers can’t yet get to mentally imagine ever getting bored or annoyed with the person they have given their heart to. I mean, what can possibly get to you when you’ve lost touch with reality anyway? Living in a tiny bubble of love is all fun and games until reality bursts your fucking fun.

That’s when shit starts to hit the fan. Your favorite buddy (High) leaves out the door, and like the good and polite guest that he likes to think he is, he gives you a gift before officially saying goodbye to you.
Feeling excited af that he at least made a thoughtful move before leaving you alone, you unwrap the mysterious bag he handed to you.

It only takes a matter of seconds until your jaw drops and you are baffled as you stare into the emptiness of the bag. There is nothing inside his gift. Nada. Zero.
Like the unexpected joker in a deck of cards, you have been fooled in the game of love.
Fooled by false appearances.
Fooled because that’s exactly what happens when you run out of novelty in love.

The truth is that the longer you play at the game of love, the harder it gets.
It’s like mathematics. You start off with additions, and then subtractions enter the game, and then multiplications and divisions get suddenly thrown into the mix. And then, it gets so hard that you realize you need a calculator at all times to make it through.
Well hey, discovering a human being in all of its depths burns as much brain cells as doing maths, I’ll tell you that.
What starts off as mysterious-sexy-exciting and unknown becomes known-annoying-boring af- and predictable.

When Novelty Withdrawal Kicks Off

Before you get yourself some ice cream to binge your now known excitement gone away, make no mistake here. It’s not because the I-wanna-fuck-you-5-times-a-day high is gone that the love is too. You are advised not to think that it could have been any different with another human being.

If you think that you’re the ultimate shit and that you, mister special, can beat the laws of human nature, no one will stop you from seeking the high through a new someone else.

But don’t be surprised if the same pattern happens again. This is just life’s way of teaching you what you didn’t want to be taught first time around. That’s what happens to those who didn’t want to take the red pill when we told them to.

The fact is that long term love doesn’t survive off idealization and short-lived excitement. Through gratitude and kindness, it does. Nonetheless, novelty isn’t exclusively a honeymoon phase thing. It can surely be brought back to the table of love at any time! As long as those who desire more of it make the conscious and mindful decision to fight for it.
