Glavni Kolodvor, the main railway station of Zagreb was constructed in 1892 by Hungarian architect Ferenc Pfaff. The 186.5 meter long building is decorated with beautiful sculptures and stucco work is located south of King Tomislav Square. Once the luxurious Orient Express passed through this station.

Zagreb has a long illustrious railway history and once the famous Orient Express, running between Istanbul and Paris, passed through Zagreb. The nearby Esplanade Hotel once housed the passengers of the prestigious Orient Express. Today the Esplanade Hotel provides a grand view of the Zagreb station complex.

The Marshal Tito Square, located in lower town of Zagreb, is one of the most beautiful square of Zagreb. The Croatian National Theatre occupies the centre of the Marshal Tito Square. The other important buildings i the Marshal Tito Square are Zagreb University, Museum of Arts and Crafts, Croatian Drama Academy, Croatian Museum of School, etc.

Marshall Tito square also houses a beautiful statue of St. George killing the dragon. The other important building located near the the Marshal Tito Square are the Mimara Museum, Ethnographic Museum and Lexicographical Institute.

Zagreb Cathedral, Kaptol, Zagreb

The most photographed structure in Zagreb is the Zagreb Cathedral, located in the Kaptol area. Originally built in 11th century the cathedral was destroyed several times.

The present twin spire structure was constructed in 1906 when the previous structure was damage beyond repairs during the great Zagreb earthquake of 1880.

Built in Neo – Gothic style the cathedral has beautiful stone works on its exterior and the interiors are decorated with stained glass windows and marble statues. The cathedral is under restoration since 1990.

Gornji Grad (upper town), Zagreb from Lotrščak Tower

The skyline on the Gradec or Gronji Grad (Upper Town) is dominated by the Lotrščak Tower. The 13th century tower was built to guard the Southern gates of the upper town.

Since 1 Jan 1877 a cannon is fired every day at 12 noon to mark the mid day. The tower also known as the Grič Tower, also offers a panoramic view of both the upper and lower towns of Zagreb.

St. Mark's Square (Left: Government Building, Middle: St. Mark's Church, Right: Croatian Parliament), Zagreb

St. Mark’s Church is another attraction of Zagreb’s upper town. The church located at the St. Mark’s Square is flanked on the left by a government building and on the right by the Croatian Parliament.

The 13th century St. Mark’s Church have beautiful tiles on the rooftop depicting the cote of arms of Croatia and Zagreb.

Mirogoj Cemetery, Zagraeb

Zagreb, the capital city of Croatia, has the distinction of housing one of Europe’s most beautiful cemeteries, the Mirogoj Cemetery.

Approached thorough a beautiful domed gateway the Mirogoj Cemetery not only houses graves from different sects of Christianity but also Muslim and Jews graves.

Zagreb Street Art Museum, Graffiti Wall, Branimirova Street, Zagreb

The Zagreb Street Art Museum (MUU) is open 24 X 7 and entry is free. The museum consists of a series of graffiti art, on the walls, along the Branimirova Street, Zagreb. The graffiti art runs all along the 450 meter long wall that separates the street from the train tracks.

The Plitvice Lakes consists of 16 lakes interconnected numerous water falls, rivulets and sub – subterranean water channels. Located 92 km South – West of Zagreb the Plitvice lakes are part of the Plitvice Lakes national Park and an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The 16 lakes are located at different levels with the highest at 636 m while the lost is at 503 m. The lakes are arranged in the North – South direction with the water exiting from the lowest lake forming the Korana River. The lakes are renowned for their distinctive colours, ranging from azure to green and from grey to blue. The colour change constantly depending upon the minerals and organisms in the water and also on the angle of sunlight.

Plitvice Lake Waterfall

The best way to explore the Plitvice Lakes is on foot. There are several walking trails ranging from a couple of hours to whole day excursions. The trails consists of wooden planks, gravel paths and even stone steps. The paths are well marked and no guide is necessary to explore the lakes.

Ferry service operates in one of the lakes and the electric bus takes visitors to the highest lake from where they can hike down.
