Here in South Africa we are celebrating the arrival of spring, and wow we have started off with some really hot and humid days already (yup, think climate change)! Spring is often used as a time to freshen up one’s look, one’s home, one’s business or even your life in general. This year my husband and I decided to get our business (Epicdev), a software development company, involved in some charity work to welcome Spring and to encourage some goodwill in our office.
We found an amazing Non-Profit Organization in our area called The Social Cause Agency, they came up with an innovative way to support local charities. This NPO runs a second-hand shop and all you need to do is drop your unwanted goods off and they will sell it. The proceeds from the sales of your items then go to one of the charities that they support (you get to choose the charity that you want your item proceeds to go to or the spread the income among all the charities). Find out more about the Social Cause Agency HERE
So, we asked our team of employees to spend a few days decluttering their homes, with the intention of donating all the items they have no use for anymore to the Social Cause Agency. We placed a box in our office and over the past few days it has been filled with all sorts of goods, from books and clothes to old guitars, hockey sticks and skateboards. The Epicdev Team really put their enthusiasm into this project and donated items that really could be another man’s treasure.
We had a look at the list of charities that the Social Cause sends the sales proceeds to and it was really hard to make a decision on who we would like to support as a company. But after a discussion we put it to vote and it was finalized that we wanted our proceeds to go to a foundation called Bobbi Bear, another local charity in our area.
Operation Bobbi Bear is a Non-Profit Organization that make it their aim to protect the human rights of our children. They work with children who have been abused physically, emotionally and sexually or who have been neglected. Their first focus is to bring the children to a place of safety and then with the help of social workers and councilors they rehabilitate the children, shower them with love and care and look place them in safe permanent care. They also make sure that those who caused the abuse and harm are persecuted according to their horrific crimes.
Today a few of our team members took some time away from the office to delivered our goods to the Social Cause shop. Our donation was gratefully received. We were also all very happy to see that the shop was stocked full of items and that there were many customers there too. There were so many treasures to be found!
If you live in Durban or surrounds, please support this wonderful initiative by either purchasing goods from their store, donated any items that you don’t use anymore or by donating directly to the charities they support.
Well done to the Epicdev team for being so enthusiastic about this project and for helping to donate towards a good cause. Have a lovely Spring and Summer!
Remember that the happiest people are not those getting more, but those giving more. H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
Keep up the good work. You are making a difference in your community. I am also in the habit of de-cluttering my house and donating unwanted items.

So glad you do the same! So many people have hordes of stuff around their homes they don't use that could really mean something to someone else. Love your username!
