It is very important to know how to spot the signs of stress before it's too late.
However, it can be hard to notice them until they've already started to affect your mental health. This is because each one of them can be seen as a different sign of pre-burnout.
Burnout, which is called "professional exhaustion syndrome" in French, can also happen in difficult family situations, like when someone is taking care of a sick family member.
The problem is getting worse at work, especially in Great Britain, where "more than half (51%) of cases of work-related illness are caused by stress, depression, or anxiety," according to Workplace Insight. This is up from 40% in 2014.
Richard Holmes, who is in charge of wellness at Westfield, has put together a list of five signs that you may be experiencing stress.
Now, here are some signs that you might have burnout syndrome.
Being tired all the time is one of the most common signs, and it's probably affecting your daily life. "High levels of stress are linked to stress hormones, which are cortisol and adrenaline." "These hormones can make you feel very tired because they are always rising," says the health expert.
When someone is burned out, they often have mood swings and get angry.
"When we're stressed out and upset, we can get angry very quickly," says Holmes. He suggests you ask yourself, "Have you recently reacted to something in a way that wasn't typical of you?"
One common psychological sign of stress is feeling tense and ready to explode.
"If it's work that's causing your burnout, for example, you may feel more anxious as soon as you're at your desk working," Holmes adds.
A lot of different bodily symptoms can also be caused by burnout, such as headaches, rashes, muscle pain, and stomach issues.
"It can also weaken your immune system, which makes you more likely to get sick," says Richard Holmes.
"Overall, keeping track of your symptoms and when they happen will help you figure out if you are experiencing burnout. If it is a recurring pattern, you can then make changes to help ease your symptoms."
Because burnout makes you tired, you may not want to do your daily tasks and find it hard to stay motivated. The expert says, "You may find it hard to do daily tasks, which means that your eating, living, and sleeping habits change." When you're burned out, making sudden changes to your daily habit can be a sign.
