It is possible that taking care of your mental health will need you to take unexpected actions at times. A recent study investigated the positive effects that a particular beauty routine had on one's mental health.
There are a lot of different things that may be referred to when we talk about taking care of our mental health. First and foremost, it is an issue of what is beneficial for each individual on a personal level.
For some individuals, it will be during the time that they spend with their loved ones or, on the other hand, alone themselves. For others, it will be through the participation in an athletic activity, a leisure activity, or through the pursuit of boredom.
Nail care was the subject of an investigation that was conducted by two academics and published in Frontiers in Psychology in September of 2023. The Japanese group conducted research to determine whether or not going to nail salons or getting your nails done could have an effect on your overall health.
A total of five hundred Japanese women between the ages of twenty and thirty took part in the research, as reported by PsyPost.
The researchers gathered a variety of demographic information, including age, location, and income, as well as information regarding the participants' nail care routines, including the frequency of their manicures and whether they were performed at home or in a salon.
The participants were also required to use affirmations in order to evaluate the various feelings that they experienced while receiving this therapy. The women who went to the nail shop were also required to evaluate the extent of the conversations they had with the person who was in charge of their nails.
These conversations could include topics such as discussing their personal lives, their daily lives, or even the challenges they faced.
This research has revealed that nail care has beneficial psychological impacts on individuals, similar to studies that have been conducted on the impact that makeup has on psychological well-being.
The participants reported experiencing a rise in pleasant emotions, feeling more relaxed, and regaining their vigour while they were receiving treatment.
People that went to the salon expressed these sentiments in a manner that was even more strong. Deeper interactions with the nail person, which were related to personal challenges or negative personality qualities, did not enhance well-being. However, superficial conversations with the nail person did have a favourable influence.
Atsushi Kawakubo makes the following observation: "This practice provides individuals with a tangible method to enhance their mental well-being, highlighting the significance of self-care and the potential advantages of sharing personal thoughts in an atmosphere that is conducive to comfort."
There is a need for additional research to be carried out in order to validate the causal connection and investigate this association using a more extensive sample size.
