Shiva's throat

The color blue is the color of Shiva's throat, one of the most important gods in Hinduism. Folklore says that the Gods churns the sea of milk in order to draw from it an elixir, when suddenly a snake emerged from the water, threatening to kill them all with its venom. Shiva volunteered to swallow the venom, and as a result his throat turned blue.

Since 1880 this has turned into an English idiom even though its origin began with a Spanish phrase many years beforehand. The Spanish aristocracy was proud of its light skin; this was proof that they did not mix with the Moors who were of darker complexion. The superficial veins appeared blue through their lighter skin. The idiom "blue blood" is actually a translation from the Spanish phrase: son of a nobleman. In Spanish it is: sangre azul.

A "blue collar worker" is a member of the working class. This phrase originated with the Roman Empire where all public workers wore blue.

The color used to ward off the evil eye

In Greece, blue was used in order to ward off the evil eye.

In Mexico, blue is the color of mourning. The color blue is considered a symbol of sorrow because the Greeks believed that it rained whenever Zeus cried (the rain was his tears) and when he got angry it stormed.

Once upon a time sailors would raise a blue flag, and place a blue ribbon across their ship, when sailing home if the Captain or one of the officers on board had died during their voyage. This is where we get the phrase: "feeling blue".
