Happy Songkran Day

Songkran Day is well-known as the Traditional Thai New Year's Day. We celebrate the days from 13 to 15 April annually.

Some people go to the temples for making merit; i.e. we give food to monks and listen to their praying and the Dharma as well.

Or if we cannot go to the temples, we may probably go to the supermarket near us. (this is Lotus Supermarket)

They have arranged magnificent Buddha images for us to worship and decorated the place with gorgeous artificial flowers.

These Buddha images have different gestures that represent each day of the week; i.e. I was born on Thursday, I should worship my Thursday Buddha image and put money in the little bowl in front of the Buddha image for making merit.

We believe this will bring us good life and prosperity in our present life and next life.

Some people go back to their hometowns to meet their families and join the happy times together. On Songkran Day like this, we normally pour Thai scented water with fragrant flowers (such as jasmines, roses, etc.) on our parents’ hands and other elders’ hands to pay respect and ask for their blessing.

Children and young people enjoy splashing water on others. It is really fun and it can release us from the heat during this summertime.

It's unfortunate that we can not do these freely nowadays as we have to be aware of the COVID-19. It's allowed to splash water in limited areas; such as Khao Sarn Road (in Bangkok), Pattaya beach, etc.
