Deciding on "the shot" for my autistic almost-teenager

in life •  7 years ago

My middle child is beautiful, silly, funny, clever, a whiz on any device you give her, and a budding DJ. She is also autistic and functionally non-verbal. She was born on my birthday (tomorrow) a true Leo in her own right. Everyone of her teachers loves her. You only need to spend a few hours in her presence to see the depth of her persona. She can weigh you and accept or dismiss you with a look and a glance. But she doesn't talk to us. She scripts dialogue from her favorite cartoons to tell us what she wants. She cannot respond to simple who what where when why questions. However, the more you work with her, the more you get the sense that she finds it all trivial and is judging your intelligence, because she literally just answered that question so why are you asking it again. Why does it matter where the dog is? Who cares what color the balloons are?

This is her, stimming to cope with the crowds at Potterfest. She did a great job keeping cool

She also can't stand any hint of residue on her body. When she has a runny nose, she will wipe her face raw. If you let her, she will use 10-12 wipes every bathroom trip. We are, naturally, concerned about what to do when she starts her period. We know that it will cause an undue amount of stress on her. We are afraid that by introducing pads, she will regress in her hard won toilet training successes. There is also the issue of sexual assault in the autism community, but forgive me if that is not a topic I am ready to broach publicly.

Needless to say, I talked over all of those things with her doctor and we have tentatively decided to try the shot once my girl starts her period. There is literally no literature on how to processed with low-verbal, normal IQ autistic girls during puberty. Guess I'll have to write it. I know that they say, if you've seen one kid with autism, you've seen one kid with autism. But it would be really nice to just hear what other parents are going through when thinking about this topic. Has anyone else tried the shot with their autistic daughter? We've worked very hard for every inch of independence that girl has. I hope we can keep moving forward.

Screw autism awareness. We're ready for autism acceptance.

I love that you have such a thoughtful, discussion based, relationship with your doctor. I think your concerns are 100% valid and that a depo shot is a great option to help your daughter develop in her positive traits without all the mess (literal and figurative) that comes with menstruation.

Wow. Those are heavy questions, and I really hope you find the answers you're looking for. We are a new community movement bringing together mothers and fathers like yourself.
We set up a Discord Channel, and now have a steemit.chat room for parents to come together and talk about the good and the bad of parenting. You've always got someone to talk to in trying times like these.

Beautiful Joselyn, and beautiful post. ❤️

My youngest has autism, very intelligent kid especially mathematics. Keep up the good parenting, Regards.

Don't know if this will help but its something to look into. I have been hearing in my quest for knowledge that getting the gut bacteria built up can help with autism. Maybe you already know that but that's what I been hearing from experts that do the research. And I am always skeptical of any shot because I don't know whats in it and have to solely rely on trusting the doctor and he is most likely just trusting someone that told him or her. Hope that helps, good luck.

It took me a while to come to this understanding, and I know that most people will foolishly disagree, but almost everything a doctor prescribes will do more harm than help. I don't know what they put in this shot you speak of, but I don't need to; as I'm certain it will do nothing to cure your child. I know this because the cures for conditions and diseases have been around longer than the pharmaceutical industry, and in the US, no doctors in the industry are allowed to use these known cures. Instead they are forced to used industry approved treatments that do nothing beneficial.
The better solution is to avoid these evil people looking to rob and harm you. Seek out people willing to help you understand the benefits of natural curing, or just pay the 10K to someone that heals for business. Or just learn what MMS (miracle mineral solution) is, and how to use it; as this has surely been proven to cure autism. But if you live in the USA, you will find that like most cures, this one is also illegal.
If you're a firm believer in scientists and medical experts, then there's obviously no reason to try this. But if you are skeptical of what they do, I suggest you look into it

Where do I possibly begin with this? Or should I just ignore it?

ignorance is bliss, just do what most people do. That way you can fit in.

your kid is awesomely cute..and quite intelligent..what a lucky mum..i wish you and your child all the best in your birthday...and many more years ahead full of fun and happiness...
