Teaching in America

in life •  7 years ago

I haven't posted in forever! I started my new career as a teacher in Texas and I have been super busy. I work for an elementary charter school (1st through 6th grade). The majority (80%) of the students are Black Americans from low income homes. Most of our students can not read or write. I was hired as an ESL teacher, however my job has turned into something much more. I mostly teach reading and writing in my classes; not English as a second language.

I work with an awesome bunch of people. I didn't realize how much gossip and bullshit floats around until I actually started working. I do believe some of those people should get a life.

While working at my new school, I have gone to training (paid for by my employer) and learned about the American curriculum. My school is very small (about 10 teachers on staff). As a result, I have a lot of freedom to bounce around the different departments and learn about how schools are ran in America. I am so grateful for this experience. I'm also thankful that my daughter has been able to see me in action and see where I work.

It was my birthday recently. The whole school sang Happy Birthday to me. Due to a steady income I was also able to afford a lovely cake for my birthday. Which I shared with friends.

Thanks for designing my cake #xtdnrymompreneur! Talk about talent!
