Are You Thinking About Giving Up?

I used to be an idiot. One day several years ago I was hanging out in an Irish pub to watch the game and drink a beer. Across the bar was sitting a very beautiful girl that I could almost swear that she was looking at me. Either that or she likes darts, at least that’s what I thought since there was a dart board behind me.

So I decided to talk to her, I didn’t know if she liked me or not, so I decided that there was only one way to find out. I decided that fear gets you nothing and that shame was grossly overrated. So I chugged some Irish courage and walked towards her.

Halfway across the bar this thought crossed my mind: “Wait, what am I gonna say?”

I told you I was an idiot.

Immediately, all kinds of stupid pick-up lines started pouring into my brain and I started pushing them away. Then all of the sudden, the doubts started to settle in: Maybe she really likes darts, maybe I remind her of someone, or maybe she just thought she knows me from somewhere.

But I ran out of steps, and before I could think of something, I found myself in front of her, and I thought of nothing better to say than this: “Do I know you from somewhere?”

Yep, like a total moron!

“You gotta have to do better than that!" She said to me.

Shame might be overrated, but it’s painful nonetheless. So I told myself that these things happens to the best of us, and I was just about to walk away and she said: “That’s it? You’re gonna give up?”

What? I said to her.

“Is that all you have?”

“Well, it was either that or what’s your favorite dinosaur?”

She smiled…

Giving Up

Giving up has got to be the number one constant presence on people’s death beds everywhere. In fact, if I was the devil I would toss that fork away, turn the oven down and just start reminding people of all the dreams that they gave up.

That’s the cruelest thing in the world.

Across the pages of the timeless best-selling book “Think and Grow Rich” reads the story of a successful car salesman who in the midst of the gold rush decided to sell everything and buy a gold mine. Can’t go wrong, right?

At first he was doing ok, more than ok, he was making more money that he’d even seen in his entire life. That mine turned out to be the richest mine in Colorado. But then one day, all of the sudden, the golden goose was no longer dropping eggs.

They drilled and drilled but they were no longer able to find the vein, and just like that his dreams were collapsing before his very eyes.

At the first sign of struggle, his entire family that warned him about buying that gold mine in the first place were first first to put pressure on him. After all, anything new can be scary, so they started reminding him how they warned him about changing careers, about how he should have just sticked to what he knew.

After all the Darbys are salesmen and nothing but salesmen. Or so they said.

One cannot help but wonder, how’s that work exactly? So if the Darbys were clock-smiths then every time a new male is born in the family, a laser descends from the sky granting him clock-smithing abilities? And removing all other skills from his repertoire? Is that how it works?

So if there’s a Darby that decides to change his career and become… say, a milkman? Should we start looking for paternity tests?

But I’m digressing. Anyways, his entire family urged him to sell immediately, and sooner than later he succumbed to the pressure and he sold his mine on cents on the dollar.

Worse than that, he sold all the machinery to a junk man for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home.

Three Feet from Gold

As it turns out, our friend was not familiar with “fault lines”, a common phenomena in Gold mines. Basically it goes like this: Gold - fault line - motherlode.

Alt Text

But here’s the kicker, the gentlemen who bought the equipment was sharp as a serpent's tooth. What he did is that he called in a mining engineer to look at the mine and do a little calculating.

The calculations later proved that he vein would be found just three feet from where the Darbys had stopped drilling.

And just like that, the junkman became a millionaire and the Darby’s well… That’s why the call it the kicker, because you can’t stop kicking yourself.

Tell me if this story sounds familiar, you log on every day, you do your best work but still can't see your post moving up the trending page. Maybe your posts are not paying off as you expected, at least not yet. So maybe you start thinking about quitting.

But what if this is just the beginning? What if steemit is right now at the same stages Bitcoin was back in 2011? Can you imagine the potential? And more importantly, are you sure that you wanna miss on it just yet?

Don’t Be Like Darby

Alt Text

“Every day of my life, I get somewhere between five and twenty emails from people who want to quit.

They’re usually coming to me as a last resort. They want me to convince them to stick it out. Often times they’ve been at it for something like eight or nine months. Or maybe they want me to validate that their instinct is correct, that they should quit.

But that’s not what I’m going to tell them.

Because in the grand scheme of things, eight or nine months is nothing. Even a year is nothing.

Nothing happens overnight.” - Gary Vaynerchuk

Thanks for sharing this picture.

This is also the picture that I thought of whilst reading this :)

Haha Synchronicity!

I agree with you,try and try until you succeed.

Haha I like Steve Carell!

Awesome depiction @inertia!

The greatest good you can do for another is not just share your riches, but to reveal to him his own

Some nice posts you have! :)

thanks mate. i do my best ;)

#noregrets !!! #YOLO !!!

Sorry couldnt help it. Good post and thanks :)

Haha! It's true... Grazie mille! :)

Your story is exactly what I feel about trending!
But I have passionate interest what happened next with that girl and you? )

Haha everybody seems to be wondering about the same thing :) She's an awesome girl... but that was a long time ago as I mentioned in the beginning.

Never ever give up
Never hold the empty cup
Always push onward again and again
Bite your lip as you take it on the chin

Life is an adventure certainly you see
Without adversity where would you be
To overcome that in our way
Is the most obvious play

Life is a game and you duck the shot
For only with practice you get hot

Some are born with silver spoon in mouth
But even for them things can turn south

Listen not to envy or hostility
Show us your mind and truly be free

You're a poet! Great stuff!

Consistently and patience seems to be very importsnt in any motivational speaker repertoire. I finally understood this the hard way: from many failures.

Good post. Truly motivational as was designed.
I would add:
"What you have to lose if you stay and try again ? You can do something else also: try to be your best yourself and expect nothing. Do it for yourself. Do it because you like doing this: writing, searching, communicating. This can be more valueble on the long run than money because you are self developing. And this is priceless.
Just enjoy the ride. You'll see where will get you.'

Thanks, man

Awesome addendum! What do you have to lose? Might as well enjoy the ride :)

Just something to break the ice

I also struggle with the confidence needed to make a move and second guess myself and wind up talking myself out of meeting a cool person or trying something new. I agree and from the older people I have learned from in my life, they wish they had done more things instead of being afraid to try. "Think and Grow Rich" is a very good example of people giving up on their dreams and not seeing them out to fruition. It's time for me to gain the confidence and knowledge to live up to my full potential and take each day as a challenge to further my growth in this world. As always great job @the-alien. (I bet the darts girl liked pterodactyls anyway, I love your humor)

Hey! Thanks for the support and nice words once again!

I'm glad you liked it! It seemed like this one was a follow up to yesterday in a way.. But also I wanted to encourage people a little bit, and give a hand, pull my weight a little bit.

I'm happy about the reception and that I can contribute... And by the way, confidence is only a product of small wins :) Get a few wins in your pocket, and you'll be happier, or surround yourself with people who support you. That should be enough :)

Thanks once again!

Yes I am on a good path with some great people whom I feel can add value to each other at the same time. Keep it up. Have yet to be disappointed by one of your posts

I love it!

But it's so much easier to just give up, right ?

As the great Shia Labeouf famously said:

"If you are tired of starting over, stop giving up !"

I like how I always post motivation comment and posts etc. And when it comes to me I give up SO easily it's not even funny. lol.

This is an amazing quote! I've never heard it before, thanks for sharing!

How about small victories? Hack your own brain :) Put small plans everyday, 2 to 4 minutes give yourself small tasks that you know that you can achieve, this way you train your brain that it's an achiever. :) and you'll get more comfortable with not giving up. :)

I hope this helps!

Yeah, I've heard of that , but I can never stick to it . It's way to easy to give up. But thanks, I'll try some more :)

This is a point I was thinking for some days. Give Steemit up. With or without it will grow and you are not the reason it becomes awesome. I was about to quit than I started to rethink. What do I even expect from Steemit that it disappoints me so hard? Is it the cash or being noticed? I found my answer and the solution. The reason is within me. Right know I am working on something that should change everything for me on Steemit. I am writing some gin in the hope people will see my creativity.

Giving up is no option. Thank you for your support writing this. I will mention you in my next work for your motivation

I'll keep a look out for your article :) Thank you so much for the nice words and I love your out-take! The less, expectations, fears..etc. the better work you'll do :)

Good luck, all the best, and I wish you a nice weekend!

I finally finished my article and had to mention you. Hope its okay

Thank you for writing this post. The theme of undervaluation is very close to each of us. You write about your own experience, but it becomes clear to everyone. Art is always studying human nature. First and foremost, people are wondering what is going on with other people. Sometimes I almost physically feel how we are all connected. Sometimes I feel the pain of another person, his fears. We all want to seem very large, but we are all so small. When I little I know of those whose life is full of pain and frustration. There is a point of no return. Easy to break yourself but you can perk. And this is the most amasing thing that we can discribe.

@the-alien, thanks for your great post!!! it is very motivational for me... sometimes is sad to read bad posts with to much up-votes and money :( but now it doesn´t matter, why? becuase you are motiving the people as me, to don´t say not...

Just be succesful!!! greetings from the #Steemitcolmbia comunity... and again thanks!!!

Thank you! I'm happy you found it helpful!

I hope you are succesful too!

Muchisimas gracias por el comentario! Saludos para toda la comunidad Colombiana! :)

What was her favorite dinosaur? Cmon don't leave us hanging like that!

Hahaha Sorry, I gotta have to this time :)

Really good post @the-alien, We need more motivational posts like this on steemit.

Thank you! I try to do my best!

Incredible motivational post. Gary Vaynerchuk is my favourite motivator ever. Watch almost every his video. So many things to learn from this guy and hopefully from you, @the-alien.

I think you should take this motivational niche at steemit and keep posting.

Thank you @phenom!! I will continue to do my best! Thanks again!

Great post!

Thanks!

It has only just begun! :)

I know, that's the fascinating part about it!

I enjoy this wonderful community, getting your morale up each time you need. Viva Gary Vaynerchuk!

I just want to tell you "Thank you!" @the-alien

Haha Viva!

Thank you!

Sometime I can be a bit straight forward, so..can you give me your greatest piece of advice?

Haha, I don't think I have a "greatest piece of advice". Maybe you should ask a mentor? Someone with much more wisdom than me? I'm humbled by your question by the way!

I believe wisdom is subjective. I've read a few of your posts and that's why I've asked you that because I feel that you have something that guides you. A core point for what you write.

Haha thank you! Yeah actually, I do have something that guides me :) I try to provide as much value to the readers as possible. That's it.

I don't focus on anything else, I try to improve everyday and share what I learn in a way that it's interesting to read. :)

And thank you for following my posts!

And this is why I continue posting my potatoes. They don't get much love...yet, but one-day the potato gold rush will start and I'll build my potato castle! Great article @the-alien!

Exactly! And many other factors such as the value of steem going up..etc.

This place is awesome and it's worth spending efforts on it :) Mainly because of you guys! Thank you!

What can I say to someone who says no to Steemit due to STEEM having the fastest production rate per year?

I don't know, don't be like Darby :)

Darby.

The dude who gave up on the gold. From the story...

I was just kidding, you said what to say to some one who says no o steem, and I said: Don't be like Darby.

I know, I enlisted in the first minutes. I hope he gathers the 500 supporters so the campaign can go live!

True stuff! I'm with @jsteck on the dinosaur comeback..Dude you should give us more on the that...maybe in another post..."How a dinosaur got me laid!"

hahaha

Hahaha I can't! Not that title anyways. A man cannot kiss and tell you know. It's still remains true.

But I know what you mean, I should've given more to the story. Another time :)

Thanks for sharing this @the-alien!

This sums up your article for me: Nothing happens overnight. - Gary Vaynerchuk

Was getting a little discouraged with my Steemit posts not getting any traction, but after reading your article, I'm back on the grind.

Thanks for the motivation!

I'm glad it helped! And by the way we all started slow, you just continue giving it your best, and you start building a reputation, and before you know it you have already an audience and you try give them your best everyday :)

It's like any other part of life really.

Thanks, and I'm glad it was helpful!

Thanks for the reply, advice, and motivation @the-alien!

I will continue to post daily, and work on posting the best content that I can contribute to the community. I guess if I don't give up, I'm bound to have a breakthrough at some point.

Thanks again!

Yes you are! I will check in to give some support if needed. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind words and support @the-alien!

And also, overnight success can be harmful like in your story. Many failures can build you, can build resilience. And determination. And more.

Yeah you're right, sometimes you need to build some foundations... Unless you're really good about adapting on the go!

This is so pertinent to Steemit. Great post, thank you!

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it!

Great story about the search for gold ;) It is hard to imagine how the idiot felt this Darby :) And yes, in everyone's life there are always moments when you want to give up.

I remember when I was a child someone said the following sentence: "The winner is not the one who is stronger. And not the one who is smarter. The winner is the one who doesn't give up". And I tried to make this phrase the motto of my life. After all, we all want to win. And I always really wanted to win. But I saw that there were stronger, more intelligent and more talented kids than me. And I was looking for any solution. So this idea was a response to my request - never give up and someday you will win.

Thank you so much for this article, @the-alien, it has a transformative effect. Therefore it's really useful.

Great sentence! And it's true, I don't know if you've read the book "Outliers" by Malcolm Gladwell? He talkes about extremely talented people that didn't make it, including a man who was smarter than Einstein (although it was his fault in this case)

Hard work, talent, and it's best if you love what you do so you don't mind working hard :)

Thank you for the kind words! I'm happy that you found it helpful!

I have not read "Outliers", but I'll definitely put it on my list. I love to read good books. Books give the opportunity to learn from great people.

I know, it's gaining the wisdom from other people. As Oscar Wilde once said, I have thousands of friends, just it's a shame that they're all trapped between paper and leather.

I butchered the quote of course :P

Really great post !, I hope you don't mind me commenting 7 days later, just saw this and started following you. I am not really a writer, I am a learner/conversationalist ... I stopped here when I saw "Outliers". I had an idea all through the book what the conclusion was going to be. There are no Outliers ! So awesome ! .. Persistence & Consistency is key ! I have one for you ! "Acres of Diamonds" Russell Conwell Best version of audiobook I have found, actually have had for years ... (Is it ok to link here?) https:(Added space here ...still learning, didnt want to spam) //www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU00E-vwxsw

I'll check it out, thanks for letting me know! I'm glad you liked it by the way!

Well, I think this is kind of playing down the situation by comparing struggling Steemers as used car salesman trying to a mine gold amateurishly.

A lot of the complaints revolve around the disparity between the their vote/SBD ratio and those who have caught the eyes of whales because they have the potential to catalyse a hike in Steemit user base. Some people could argue that quality of content is subjective but a trend was formed and there were a massive sense of indignation that resulted in an attempt to diversify the content.

https://steemit.com/steem/@steemed/removing-authors-of-steem-posts

I guess in a way, I see what you are saying and it's nice you are trying encourage others but the metaphor you have used are pretty inept and paint a false picture on what's been going on. I love Steemit because I have genuinely discovered new content everyday and it sucks to see people who put a lot of effort in, get shit tonnes of vote but only garner pennies for their efforts.

The point is NOT that that they were clueless and have missed the gold vein. The gold were given to those who can't even dig.

Yep, never give up...works well for me too.

I'm glad then! :)

Thank you for the article. Everything is painted in detail!

Thank you! I'm glad you liked it!

The darkest hour is just before the dawn. Great post @the-alien :) Everyone needs this reminder at least once in their lifetime.

I couldn't have said it better. The Darkest hour is just before dawn.

I'm glad you liked it. :)

Waiting for some more Heidi adventures you know? :) Safe and happy travels!

I like this, "Many of the failures in life happen because people do not realize how close they are to succeed when they surrender."
Never give up.

Never :)

One can never have too many reminders to persevere and never give up on pursuing hopes and dreams.

I remember when I was incredibly unsuccessful in achieving my goal of having a loving long-term romantic relationship, partly because I followed some advice that led me to become passive in pursuing relationships. Once I learned after many years that I needed to become active in pursuing my dreams instead of just hoping that they would happen, I started to seek out resources that would help me get closer to my goal. I faced my fears, learned more about myself and others, made plenty of mistakes, and now I find myself in a great relationship with a loving, intelligent, Steem-curious, and attractive (inside and out) woman. I may write my own post about that journey someday, but I am so grateful that I never gave up!

Wow! That's amazing! I'm so happy for you, and grateful that you're sharing this.

I wish you too all the happiness!

And if you do share the story someday, please let me know because I would love to read it!

All the best! :)

Nice post. Just gave me the motivation to wake up tomarrow and keep on keepin' on.
But sometimes a person needs some support to hold up his dreams. It seems in your story, Darby's family and friends gave up on him before he did. That ultimately broke him down.
Also reminds me of something one of my proffesors told me
"A failure is not someone who fails at something... a failure is someone who fails and gives up"

That's a great quote! Sometimes you have to seek help from the engineer like that junkman as well :) They tell you how close you are..

Excellent post dude!!! I love Gary Vaynerchuk's stuff - he's a real inspiration and his delivery is AMAZING.

I know that I'm glad I have the mindset that if I'm enjoying what I'm doing, then success will come through time. I'm lucky to have a career as a Music Teacher, and I've really enjoyed making YouTube videos over the last almost 9 years. I always loved YouTube and the feedback and 2 years ago I switched to a primary focus in Mobile Gaming - Now I'm at 93,000 Subscribers, and it's just so cool that people watch me all over the world on a daily basis.

The Gary video was awesome!! I decided to write my response while watching the video. Work is consistency. I know I'll have 'Whale Like' success on Steemit someday - I'm not giving up.

YEAH BUDDAYYY!!

-bigedude

That's awesome 93,000 subscribers! Hope you keep multiplying that!

Great comment by the way! I love Gary too, he's a true inspiration! What I love the most is that he always says that he fights to bring the most value to people, and that's how he knows that he's gonna win!

As I said, awesome comment dude! I will follow you when I finish typing.

To your success!

Very inspirational! Thank you!

I'm glad you liked it!

I wanna quit Steemit too...so you are telling me to keep the faith?

What's the going rate on Irish courage these days? lol

Haha That was a lifetime ago though..

Never give up. Never ever give up. If you believe in yourself and if you love what you are doing then keep pushing on. You will be rewarded.

Good luck to everybody.

@the-alien - thank you very much for this reminder. I appreciate it. You radiate good energy.

Thank you very much!

And I absolutely agree of course, if you love what you do, just keep pushing and you'll be rewarded!

The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.

Wow, never thought about it that way , thanks!

Excellent !, One of my personal faves ... "The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it." - Michelangelo

Thank you for this, I really enjoyed reading and watching it!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! :)

nice post..

Thank you!

👍amazing post

Thank you!

I loved so much reading this article.
Qitters never win, winners never quit!!!
This is for sure. People need to learn this persistance factor, they need to be a bit more tougher. They need to learn to finisz what they started. Congratulation @the-alien :)

Thank you @margot! I'm happy you enjoyed it! :)

I did very much. I would even go further into conclusion that people now are just expecting overnight success without doing the job. Doing whatever it takes to reach the goal got exchanged with doing what I like and what I am comfortable in doing. However comfort zone is not the place to grow anything creative. It is the cemetery for all kind of dreams and ideas. Thank you :)

Thank you actually! :) I'm glad you shared your thoughts :) The magic happens out of your comfort zone... I don't know who said that.

I don't know who said that, but the most important We know that comfort zone is not the best place for creativity :)

If we just work harder we will be rewarded. But the system cannot support rewarded everyone; it's biased towards large bounties for some, and small for the rest. As authors who've received large bounties tend to continue to receive large bounties, so do the small players continue to receive small rewards.

In such an imbalanced system it doesn't matter how hard you work. steemit is not a meritocracy.

Cool post @the-alien! I have some experience in sports. I had to lose 21 matches straight before winning. I really sucked at competition. Now I'm getting some medals from the competitions. Haven't won any tournaments yet but one day I will! :)

Wow! You're a true inspiration! If you gave up on the 20th game, you might've never gotten the medals. :)

Congratulations by the way!

And thank you!

good job, good luck, good blog)) done a lot of work

Thank you!

Like magic this post shows up when I needed to hear, well read, those exact words. Thank you for sharing and I will not give up! Like many others around here I struggle even while I know my struggles are just my own fears of not being seen. Again thank you for your wonderful words!

Yeah, unfortunately the struggle is real :( But I wish you all the luck! And thank you for the nice words!

My favourite dinosaur is the laserraptor.

Hahaha

Wait let me google it!

Wow! Kinda of the superman of dinos :)

What is your favorite dinosaur by the way?

Haha! :) The big one with small hands, what is it called? Oh yeah, T-rex.

I think he's just a miss-understood dino, in another life he would be just a regular pianist playing in Jazz bars with his little hands ;)

Not in my mind.I will do everything to be success in life.

I wish you all the luck in the world!

There are no guarantees that the mine is full of gold. You may end up digging and digging, never finding any.

Also, the Steem mine is full of other miners competing for a limited resource, where some have more "digging power" than others.

When people say they feel like giving up, it's probably better to ask them why they feel that way and try to empathise with them.

On Steemit, large rewards happen over night quite often.

You're right, there is no guarantees that the mine is full of gold. There is no guarantees in life either. Very few people achieve success in their careers expecting guarantees. The truth is, there are no guarantees. :(

And as I always say, why not treat steemit as any other facet of life.. That's all I'm saying.

But I hear ya.

It's important to keep making this point. You found yet another clever way to make it. We all have to remember to be patient. It's tough but anything worthwhile always is.

It's true, anything worthwhile is worth it! Sometimes you have to re-group to change gears and access if you're on the right path, but persistence is what will get you there.

Thank you for the nice comment!

We should only give up bad habits...thanks for the inspiring post!

Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!

You do know Gary is offering for people to pitch him a 30 video. Let me get the link. Very motivational guy to motivate others. pitchmeyourbusinesse430d.png

Yeah I knew of course, thanks for sharing the link to motivate others!

Gary V is one of the best people in the world! His lessons, I mean. He tries to give as much value as possible, straight to the point. He only cares about provinding value instead of how he could "sell them a product"

And as a consequence, people trust that and he deserves all the success he gets.

That was a good, motivational read! Thanks for writing it down and thanks for that other thing you did (it will be used well, somewhere in the next 48hrs I'll post how well ;) ). Upvoted & following!

Thank you! I'm happy you liked this story :) And actually, you are a true motivation! in fact if memory doesn't fail, according to the comments on your posts you are sort of a heroine to many people. Leading by example and all, pretty soon we're gonna have steemians circling the planet in search for dreams to fulfill ;)

I will be on the look-out for your next post of course, I always enjoy your posts :)

Happy Birthday! Be happy, smiling and inspire us again :)

So here we are again at the cross roads so do we reach way, way down in our being and sing the "Fight Song" by Rachel Platten and don't give up. My answer is yes, yes.
dubloon135

Thanks @dubloon135 I'lll listen to the song :)

I needed this.

We all need to remind ourselves sometimes that we can do it :)
