Gratitude Blog # 17 (Empathy)

in life •  6 years ago  (edited)

"Empathy is really the opposite of spiritual meanness. It's the capacity to understand that every war is both won and lost. And that someone else's pain is as meaningful as your own. "

Barbara Kingsolver

Protests, and Boycotts, and Indignation, OH MY!

It's been an interesting week on social media to say the least. I've had some enlightening and frank discussions the past several days, on and off social media while trying to be relevant and gentle with my responses. I've grown exhausted of the divisiveness that plagues the online community in these times and I have decided that maybe an olive branch would be more effective than a two by four.

Luckily, the conversations I've experienced have remained somewhat civil, but with little to no concessions. What strikes me most is the Us versus Them mentality, but last I checked, we're sharing the same planet, country, city or town, or community. I'm not claiming innocence or pointing fingers at all, but I do want to see a change in myself and hopefully affect a change in others. It probably seems a bit ideological or naive but a little empathy is what we all could use right now. Instead of barriers, build a bridge of commonalities and break the hold of divisiveness that is being used as a weapon. It's time to challenge yourself to be a voice of reason.

As usual, thanks for reading.

Peace!

I cant agree more on empathy..sometimes it is blessing sometimes curse

I feel the same way

truly said!! The more you want to impact the world, the less you have to think about others. In fact, the more you want to impact the world, the more you need to think about yourself.

So is life you care for yourself and makes life what better for yourself, sometimes we loose and sometimes we win, Kryptonia @mrlopez

Bright thoughts, but people have been at each others throats since Cain and Able. Only the Lord, the prince of Peace can bring us to the point where we can love one another, truly. upvoted

It is time to call a spade a spade.

We should definitely be calling people out but your words should be thought out as well. Yelling insults back and forth won't solve anything

It is time to call a spade a spade.

Showing empathy help break barriers and could make you reach your destination

True enough, empathy is the weapon we could use right now.

I will keep this short and simple "Action speaks better than words."

I believe both are important

Awesome blog series. Keep up the great work.

I can totally agree, empathy works wonders.

howdy sir witty-waiter! wow are you talking about on steemit that there are big disagreements or some other social media sites?

I haven't seen much on here so I was just curious but no you're not being naive, unless we both are! lol. but I'd rather strive for peace and be hopeful of that and to find common ground like you said.

Steemit is my happy place. LoL. The conversation happened in Facebook. I reposted this blog there as well but sadly it fell on deaf ears for the most part

well sir I heard that facebook is just a bunch of idiots but I've never been on it myself. lol.
hey are you guys bracing for alot of rain from Florence?

It's clear and sunny here. We might get a little rain if it gets a little closer but I'm not expecting much of anything

oh ok well that's good..and you have to work this weekend of course? Is it just a normal work week for you or do you have anything unusual going on there?

Just a normal week here. It may be a little busy because a lot of people evacuated to our area from NC
