The Vest Weight Loss Method ~ Current Vest 30cm/12in
The measurement of health gain and weight loss that I have decided to use is The Vest method. I will very simply track my nice vest over time and see if I can’t get it buttoned up one day.
It will be a very long journey and to be successful I will likely need to lose somewhere in the neighbourhood of 155 Pounds, 70.3 Kilograms or 11.07 Stone.
Basically a UFC lightweight, in other words.
I have a Scully 2XL vest that I wore in 2013 at my CD release concert. Nope, I couldn’t button it up then either, but it was a lot closer to being buttoned up then than now. Seeing as I’ve put on about 50 pounds since 2013 that is no surprise.
My current Vest is 30cm or 12 inches apart at the bottom button which will be the hardest one for me to close.
Why The Vest Method: A Little Background
When it comes to weight loss, I have tried nearly every method there is. I have watched inspirational videos, followed wonderful stories, watched the blood sweat and tears of reality weight loss shows and seen the rise and fall of all of those outcomes. Some people have remained successful, many have ended up worse off than before. I, myself, have lost as much as 80 pounds on one diet and then gained back over 100.
So why The Vest method for me? Don’t I want to write a book or become a YouTube sensation with my incredible weight loss story, inspire people and help change lives? Well of all that, I wouldn’t mind simply helping people make a change. But what remains first and foremost is that I simply want a better life.
Absolutely everyone that I know in my life accepts me as I am. No one is asking me to change. I feel no pressure from anyone or anything. Other than some basic realities. I want to be comfortable in my own skin. I would like to fit into clothes comfortably and not be miserable on a hot day. I would love to be able to travel on buses and airplanes and use only the space in my own seat, and not be in someone else’s space simply because I’m too big.
There are a million reasons why I want to change my life.
Even as I started to get bigger after college I could feel myself being excluded from many activities. I hope you don’t think people excluded me. They didn’t. I played a lot of tennis and golf after college, continued doing karate and many other fun things. But very slowly, activities started to crop up that were not a good match for my slowly blossoming size. Some friends would want to go rock climbing or caving.
It wasn’t for me anymore because of simple physics. In the words of John Mayer, Gravity. And while we’re on the subject of John Mayer I wasn’t bigger than my body, my body wasn’t a wonderland, I also wasn’t in love with the shape of me. I was beginning a slow process of self inflicted exclusion from things I would love to do because I was not, and still am not, in control of my eating and general health.
The Vest Method is a plan to slowly move my vest to the closed position over time, and then keep it there. I’m not going into a water tank to calculate my mass, I’m not buying fat calipers and I’m not torturing myself with before, during and after pics. Well maybe I might take a face pic once a day lol. Who knows. But I’m not going down some rabbit hole that will cost me heartache and wasted time and treasure. Extreme Weightloss Makeover, the Biggest Loser and more have all had people’s journeys meticulously documented. Use your imagination. My simple plan is to take care of myself, eat better, live better, enjoy life more, do more, play sports again, hike wild places again. That’s the stuff I want to show you.
The Vest will attest to my victory or failure.
Whatever your struggle. Whatever your demon. I wish you life with all my heart.

Train @jiujitsu!
Losing wait is such a boring grind. May as well learn something cool while you do it and carve off shoe pounds. ;)
If you are in Ontario, I could point you in the right direction.
Srsly great initiative on your part and vocalizing it is the first and most important step. I believe in you.

Thanks Zeke! That sounds really cool. Oddly enough I'm at a pretty high level in grappling, wrestling and other disciplines. I am out of shape and not training at the moment. About 18 months ago I went to a local jiujitsu gym in Cobourg. That was an interesting experience seeing as I'm over 50 now. One of the 20 something year old guys welcomed me warmly and said it was truly wonderful to have me there because we never get anyone as old as you here.
I had a ton of fun tapping out guys all night long. What makes me extra dangerous right now though is that I can make sure I land on you if it's going to the ground. That is gonna hurt like a mofo haha.
Thanks for chiming in brother. Where are you located roughly again? Do we need to do a mini meetup? I'm 1.5 hours east of Toronto.

1.5 hours west of Toronto. I get there often so we should grab a beer and sign some STEEMit autographs for sure!

That's an honest and inspiring write up in my opinion and I wish you well in your efforts!
I'm also similarly working on my health after neglecting it for a while. It can be tough to find the motivation sometimes but very worth it in my opinion.

Thank you @apolymask. I have chosen a very simple way to track my progress that is very 'counter' to traditional weight loss or health tracking methods. But there is a simple reality to this for me. There were no obsessions with tracking and monitoring weight loss in centuries past.
You were either filling out the pleats in your toga, or not.
I'm with you on your journey and hoping for your success. Long term, lasting success.

If u grew up in the good ol usa, Your childhood was filled with constant exposure to the most potent forms of sugar designed to be more addictive than cocaine. That same level of sugar terrorism has followed you into adulthood. The companies trying to turn you into a sugar junkie are bigger than ever & they are spreading all over the world. They want u to have max sugar bliss point in every drink, every snack, every medication. They want every advertisement to trigger your cravings.
Cut the sugar from the sugar pushers out of your life & you will button up all those vests in no time. Don’t diet, don’t beat yourself up if u slip up, just steadily improve your sugar discipline over time. Takes a little time to get out of the withdrawal stage but I’d bet sugar is the culprit.

I am going to agree with you on sugar for the most part. Sugar in various forms does have a place in high end nutrition, but people don't know how to use it. They use it recreationally but the dietary truth is that protein is like nails and sugar is like hammers that drive protein into the muscles.
I'm not going to get into the science of that but I will say that there were no obese babies until high fructose corn syrup slinked into baby formula brands like the grim reaper. Those companies have no conscience along with pretty much everyone else in the processed food industry.

Ya, of course we need some sugars. Just not the poisonous kinds you see in all the aisles of drug stores. You know, where people go to get “healthy” from the pills, the dr prescribed because the patient ate too much sugar 😂
I still occasionally binge on sugar, most of what I wrote I’m trying to force into my head about sugar consumption.
I read your other post about health, good read. I used to be about 290lbs at the heaviest while playing football in college. Was smart enough to quit that game early on & have kept my weight between 235-215 for about 2 decades. Highly recommend regular yoga if you’ve never tried it. Definitely the best systemic health exercise I’ve found

Big love to you, Bug. I like your honesty and laid-back attitude, and the fact that you're not looking for anyone else to give you advice. I agree, we each have to find the path that is best for us, no matter what subject we're talking about. The vest method sounds like a good one. :)

Thanks a lot Katrina I appreciate you stopping by to comment. I finished my first week of doing my own thing and it actually went really well. Time will tell, but I am happy to start week 2 tomorrow and start the long journey of closing the vest! :)
