Introduction
There seem to be a lot of people talking about the US election and I just wanted to add my 2 cents as my American friends say.
Last night @skeptic was taking bets on Trump winning.
Everyone expected Hillary to win so it seemed like a safe bet for those that were betting against him. Personally I had a feeling (as I stated then) that Trump would win and said that I did not want to bet against him.
It just seemed likely to me that he would win.
Why did he win? - My thoughts
- People are fed up with politicians.
- They feel like they have no voice.
- They don't feel they are listened to and are looked down on by those in power.
- Voting for Trump (like the Brexit vote) is basically sticking a finger up (US style) to the people in power.
Are the people that voted for him racist, sexist, homophobes?
Some of them probably are BUT I believe the vast majority are NOT.
I believe this is a protest vote. People's hatred of Hillary meant that they would have voted for anyone except her.
Even her own party don't like her.
It seems even people from the very groups that Trump was attacking voted for him rather than voting for her.
Why would they do that? I don't think they would vote for someone that they truly believed was going to persecute them:
I don't think the general public are as stupid as people pretend
They don't take the political and pre election rhetoric seriously anymore and they realise that a politician (even a new one like Trump) will say whatever it takes to get elected. It bears little relation to what will actually happen once they get into power.
As we have already seen Trump has toned things down and changed his tone since winning.
That is exactly what I expected.
My personal belief is that in this modern globalised world the president or prime minister has very little say on the day to day running of the world.
- I think people are aware of my opinions on corporate and banking control so I won't go off on a long discourse about that - I just don't think politicians have much say any more, not even the ones at the top of the political tree.
I would be absolutely shocked if anything changed significantly with Trump as president because there are limits to what he can do even if he wanted to make a significant change. I am not convinced that he did though:
Trump is not as much of a buffoon as he pretends to be
I think he played the political game that he needed to play and we will start to see more reasonable behaviour from him as time goes on.
His victory speech is a good example of a more conciliatory and measured tone.
I should be just the kind of person who should be panicking over Trump but I'm not
I love visiting America and have visited at least a dozen times over my life.
As a brown skinned person with a Muslim name I should be absolutely terrified of ever visiting the US again shouldn't I?
Of course not.
I'm not going to change my behaviour and I am not worried about anything changing. I think the people who are panicking over this are being a bit silly and premature.
Does this mean I like Trump?
No. I think he is probably a complete scumbag but it seems to be almost a prerequisite for the job.
That is not reason to think apocalyptically though.
Let's just wait and see what happens.
I'm not a fan of Obama but he did make a good point when he said that the sun would still rise after the election.
Conclusion
I've made my point and I wanted to keep this brief.
I see the US election result as a protest vote and a poke in the eye to the establishment. Trump is probably not a good guy - but I can't think of a politician who is.
The world will probably not be ending.
As always I could be completely wrong but I doubt it.
Things will go back to normal soon and little will change.
We will still be servants to our corporate overlords and the progressive erosion of our civil liberties and privacy will continue without interruption.
Thank you for reading.

Love your article, brother!
Everyone makes out Trump to be a monster. The reason the polls got it so wrong was because Trump supporters are demonised so of course they won't make themselves known. Except for voting day!
I mean, he does say outlandish things but I think it's just the way he flows. Doesn't mean he's gonna carry them out. I mean the media have gone off the deep end yet again! Always showing distraught Hillary supporters, talking about how Trump may blow up the world with those nuclear codes, saying he's going to build the infamous Mexican wall! It's media making money off of spreading FUD, nothing more. They're having a field day feeding off of people's paranoia! I say he's president now. I wish everyone would just get over it and actually see what he does once in office, lol!
Propaganda to the max!

You have some good points. Hillary should not have even ran as the amount of misconduct, treason, threats, underhanded dealings, illegality and disregard for human life meant that she would not win and probably would have been impeached if she did. She was also keen on starting a full-out war with Russia, which could have led to WW3. If you ever look on LinkedIn, all of her posts have thousands of replies calling her a traitor and advocating for her arrest. And those are people posting under the real name, not being anonymous anarchists behind screens.
Trump is not that great of a businessman but he's a pretty normal person in comparison and as you said, there are limits on what a president can do. His business and realestate background may benefit in his future policies regarding the economy and inner cities, which are currently rotting away. Parts of Detroit are as uninhabitable as some war-torn countries. The drugs coming over the border are going straight into the schools (and those are not weed). I have pictures of a small town with literally every business closed down. People who don't have work-related insurance are paying $500 a month for just their kid to have it (this is what my friend is paying for his son now that he lost his job).
Something had to change and Hillary with all her corruption had no plans to fix anything. Everything she spewed was a scare tactic to get people of color and women to vote for her, nevermind that her background is defending rapists in court and being one of the reasons there is mayhem in the middle east to begin with. Women and people in general aren't all that stupid it seems, as the election results show.

Yes I think people are wising up. I rarely if every watch the news on TV because it is BS that is meant to scare us. Yesterday I watched the election on TV because it was kind of a special occasion and the fear mongering was very obvious.

People want a change but I doubt much will change as the same bureaucrats run the country in most countries.

While I personally believe this was a large mistake on the part of my fellow Americans, life goes on. I do not believe trump possesses the necessary intelligence to function as a competent president, he certainly isn't a competent business man. shrugs
Not that I liked Clinton either.

I agree but I don't think it matters if he is intelligent enough or not. He is just the figurehead. It is the people behind the scenes that do the work for him.

YES. Thank you for sharing this. After reading your post and one from @andrarchy last night, I'm feeling a little less crazy. In my circles back home in the States, almost no one understands this. It's extremely frustrating.
It's times like this I'm thankful for Steemit. You can actually find rational people, and it seems to be the only place where one can express their opinion without everyone getting butthurt and angry. (Granted there is always backlash to any opinion but it seems far more mitigated.) Thanks again for sharing! It helped cheer my day up. (:

I agree with you, there's no need to be afraid.
I don't like both the candidates, but I'm from Italy and I think voting doesn't really change things.
I also think that the US President isn't really the one who decides: there are lobbies and financial elites, the military-industrial complex and so on, so the President is basically hostage of this powers and if he doesn't follow their directives it will have big problems.

Exactly and even if you put aside the lobbies and financial elites - the actual day to day running of the government machinery is carried out by career civil servants. They don't change (at least not very often).

Mostly I think Trump won because Bernie Sander's people in the rust belt didn't vote, or actually voted for Trump, based on Hillary stealing the primaries from him. That's my idea about this, perhaps I'm wrong but it is at least a part of the reason for Trump's victory.
Afraid, I think everyone should be afraid this guy doesn't seem to have a plan, he looks like the Brexit negotiations, he says one thing one day and then he back tracks the next. Not that I think Hillary was any better.
