A commission to make a bench, to be sited under a tree planted in memory of a much loved wife, mother and grandmother.

I was reminded of a tree that fell in the Clay Pit Woods during a summer storm: Sweet Chestnut, Castanea Sativa, its straight grained logs split readily and its timber is durable
and strong.

Logs quartered and then cleft to size using froe and maul.

Legs and back posts shaped using drawknife and shaving horse.

For the seat, a slab of air dried Sessile Oak, Quercus Petraea, felled and milled by chainsaw five years ago.

The seat back made from quarter sawn oak planks, planed all round. All finished with exterior grade furniture oil.
