What's it like to be a Spy in Real Life?steemCreated with Sketch.

James Bond

James Bond is a shitty spy. This is a rather untimely remark to make in light of the recent demise of beloved actor Sir Roger Moore, but it had to be said. Actually, it didn't really, I could have just used Ethan Hunt as an equally viable example and took my chances with Tom Cruise dying by the time I finished this article. Hopefully I'll remember to make the change before I post this so as to not come across as a dick, but if I don't: hang in there at least for another few days Sean Connery or you'll make me look even worse!

Subtitles: dang da-da dang dang, dang da-da dang dang [Gunshot]

So why is our favorite world renowned, womanizing, speed boat racing, violent prone, borderline alcoholic in a tuxedo a bad secret agent? Oh...I see, I think I just answered my own question. In addition to the fact that he is famous, he uses his real name, 'Bond,' and in case the villain missed it the first time around, he'll repeat his full name: 'James Bond'.

Presumably he's not very representative of real world espionage agents. After all, what do you expect from a guy who chose his code name based on how much the last digit resembles a gun? So what does being a real spy involve and more importantly, how do I sign up?

What Do Spies Do?

The most impressive feat I see spies pull off consistently in movies is when they're stealing information from an enemy database they're always able to insert the USB stick into the computer the right way around on the first try. Honestly I'm so damn bad at this that I'm just happy to get it right on the first go when removing the damn thing. But what else do they get up to?

Spies are renowned for their Sherlock Holmes cosplay

Spies are agents of international espionage - their job revolves around collecting important information that other nations wish to keep confidential in order to gain the geopolitical upper hand for their own nation. It would be akin to someone from Synereo joining this platform with the purpose of scoping out and sabotaging their competition. The follow up movie would certainly be entertaining: The Spy Who Flagged Me.

Spies mostly attempt to do this either through surveillance or by recruiting prospective turncoats like, say, an Iranian scientist or an American President, to feed them highly classified information on an ongoing basis.

Although spies employ a very particular set of skills, skills they've acquired over a very long career to achieve this end, certain myths ought to be dispelled.

  • Spies aren't all really hot - Extracting information via sex is frowned upon in the U.S. although other countries like Russia continue to use this technique. This is why I'm always suspicious of exotic girls who aren't resisting my advances before the roofies kick in.
  • Spies don't drive fancy cars - Most spies don't get to drive Aston Martins that can travel up walls and shoot heat seeking missiles out of its exhaust pipe and transform into a giant sword wielding robot when required. That tends to go against the whole 'clandestine' theme.
  • Spies live really dangerous lives - This isn't entirely true, most spy work is relatively safe, but they do tend to endanger the lives of their informants. I guess snitches get stitches everywhere.

Overall, although you do become privy to certain secrets and can't divulge them to even your closest friends and family, spy work is mostly comprised of the same dull meetings and monotonous paperwork that comes with most jobs.

How Do You Become a Spy?

You can't choose to become a spy, they choose you. Nah, not really; you can just go to the CIA website and apply like it's a position for a check out clerk at Walmart. And unlike the KGB, I'm in with a chance too as the 'no soliciting information via sex' rule means you don't even have to be good looking.

Not the best looking website, but then again do you need one if there's no ICO?

Aside from awesome USB skills, what other attributes are they looking for? Well you need to be a U.S. citizen, have no criminal record, hold a bachelors degree and additional skills like speaking multiple languages without an accent, experience living abroad, serving under the special forces and being an X factor finalist all greatly increase you odds of success.

Well the chances are slim but I've still been working on my intro line: 'The name's Gar. Trafal-Gar' Hmm...yeah, needs work.

Good thing is that, @trafalgar is not a spy. He's a Doctor and Captain of the Heart Pirates. hahah.. if you know what I mean. xD

I thought the name sounded familiar 😂
Thanks for the clue

HAHAHA
that's exactly where I got that name from, you're the first one to call me out on it since joining steemit =)

For real? Am I the only here loves watching anime and reading mangas aside from you? Sigh... I guess most steemians here lived in boring life. LOL :)

I love Anime too dont worry jajaaj

people keep thinking I live near trafalgar square :p

Nahh. You are from Flevance. You're one of the Eleven Supernovas before and now you're a Shichibukai.
Okay enough, Manga is Life! ughh xD

For more than 15 years, I have been working at home, through the Internet, for an open source software company. Most of the software we produce is available for free. We make our revenue with support contracts from other companies that use our software.

For years, my children have tried to explain to their friends what I was doing, without any success. I am not sure they themselves understand exactly why I am paid to do what I do.

They have told me, years ago, that their friends did not believe their explanations an where convinced that I was a spy.

This is how I became a spy, without even trying.

hahahaaha genuinely hilarious
you have sort of 'look' of a spy too judging from your picture
can go from affable, to imposing, to completely inconspicuous at will!

That's hilarious. I'm sure you're a much cooler dad to your kid's friends because of it.

So James, we meet again!

Great story!

Excellent post, comrade! The KGB approves!
P.S. For Mother Russia!

In Soviet Russia, the KGB does not approve: you approve the KGB.

You know too much! We will watch over you, comrade...

haha thanks terry, glad you approve =)

The only spy I personally would consider to be a 'hero' is Edward Snowden. :)

Yes I suppose thats true
too bad he has to live in hiding

The truth is supposed to hurt.

glad you enjoyed that one :)

This caught my eye. Why?

Because the James Bond character was actually based off a real life spy trained at the famous Spy Training camp 5 mins south of my house here on the Lake Ontario waterfront -- it was called Camp X.

It trained USA and UK spies and allies. I was a Camp X activist over the years raising awareness for this project and the famous Camp X lead guy writing books, giving speeches etc on this is a friend of mine -- Lynn Philip Hodgson!

Look it up!!!

I like your line about Gar, it is funny man. LOL

I hope we will see you around the latest

Here is my favorite spy...

Now we have to assume that she inserted the flash drive properly. But we definitely have evidence that she can remove it on the first try.

And honestly, her main job is to get in that costume. Thank you costume designers!!!

You HAVE to cosplay her at the next comicon event you attend!
I wonder how your kids will feel if you did that

Ashamed... like they do about 99% of the time they are dealing with me.

Want a realistic spy movie? How about 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy' That is the stuff--no glamour, lots of chess-like thinking, detective-like surveillance, sifting through data (yawn, coffee, doughnuts).

Lots of tired, middle-aged people that are as about as glamorous and enthused about their jobs as postal workers--and shooting a guy at the end like you'd shoot a sick, old dog...

haha true, that's a good movie though :)

deserve resteem and upvote....

thank you very much :)

u r welcome...

wow...... very nice post @trafalgar

thank you walcot :)

I’m a fan of the Bond movies. I go to see them for the same reasons everyone else does: the gorgeous women, the most beautiful places on Earth and, of course, the roller-coaster ride of a plot. I delight in Bond’s complete defiance of gravity. His suits never wrinkle, his Aston Martin is never in the garage for repairs, the girls never say no.

LOL!

ya he keeps pushing his luck and it just keeps paying off! It's almost like he's not real

I spy with my little eye

hope your neighbor remembers to shut her curtains next time :)

Haha you speye

"I've still been working on my intro line 'The name's Gar."

Oh, sorry, I thought it was a Square ;-)

Gar, Square Gar haha :p

:-D

Totally agreed with you man.. WORTH reading this post, thank you

thank you

i would definitely hire a spy for ailien info in the government juss to verify!

haha good idea

Lol.. funny stuff... spy work may not be your thing, but stand up comedy might :)

haha I'm flattered
I think the best spies give people the impression that spy work wouldn't suit them :)

Hahaha... it's the ultimate disguise.. kudos

Anna Chapman - A real life Russian spy. Don't know if she drives fancy cars or lives a dangerous life but she definitely has the looks.

yes but she also looks a lot like a spy!
maybe it's some sort of double bluff

The USB thing is pretty high level I must admit. I never considered Bond to be a spy though, I thought he was the hotshot that went on the missions to take care of things AFTER they received info.

he's definitely a spy in MI6
he just blows things up and battles billionaire villains with some deformity when he's not too busy shagging girls

i remember watching a episode on either history or one of those about one if isreals top spies, this guy was about 60 years old around 5.5 ft tall and about 50 pounds overweight(he looked like someones grandpa, and not a max von sydow grandpa either more like grandpa from the munsters) and this guy did some amazing things because everybody just kind of overlooked him, getting noticed is probably not a great idea if you were a spy , i guess that is how he made it to his 60s

haha ya you have to keep an eye out on the people who are just too inconspicuous

Upvoted and resteemed. Your post with all the comments and replies is too funny to miss! What would Bond do with a USB stick?

probably kill 14 north korean guards and sink a navy ship

Bothan spies are the worst. They are constantly trying to infiltrate and steal from the Empire.

haha if only you mowed them down a little faster you could have got them before the left with all that data on a 3.5" floppy disk :p

Interesting, I never could have imagined even twitter or facebook has spies on it. guess next time I am making my political comments private. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE!

Maybe there's a spy in this very coversation ;)

I agree with most of your assertions, however in defense of the writer, Ian Fleming, his books and his "Spy" were simply a product of the time. The first novel, Casino Royale was written in 1952. A total of 11 novels were written prior to his death in 1964. Total sales of all volumes was in excess of 100 million copies.

Photo Credit: Ian Fleming - Wikipedia

Although Mr. Fleming was the "Real Deal", a British Naval Intelligence Officer in World War 2, his James Bond character was not close to reality at all. The later films, with their focus on action scenes, girls and gadgets, further sank into unreality and great mass market popularity.

Anyone looking for more realistic spy stories can checkout the John le Carré series of books (and movies) written by another English spy more grounded in reality.

oh I remember some of the iconic villains like that guy with the bladed trilby hat or the indestructible giant Jaws

when Pierce Brosnan came along however they had a couple of silly ones like that north korean dude with a few diamonds stuck in his face lol

A hot spy would draw too much attention. James Bond has to be the exact opposite of what a real spy would be like!

haha thanks a lot cryptofiend :)

NP:) Are you on Twitter?

ya i came from twitter before this, but i rarely use it these days
i don't tweet about cryptos much like i rarely write about cryptos

Just use it as a promotional tool - use the competitors resources to forward our own agenda - it is a useful strategy.

I quite like all my twitter friends (have 5k followers, not sure how many are active but I was a decent hashtagger) so I don't want to spam them with promotional material

However, when the signup process has improved and zappl is out, I can probably start getting some of them to jump ship

You also have to be really good at listening to villain monologues. Well, at least at pretending to listen, because this is your best time to escape! :)

gotta think under pressure though as the laser is approaching your genitals...

:D

Very interesting post. The Bond character was really a cool and entertaining one.

yeah I think it's like one of the biggest franchises ever

in reality, Bond would be a dead man

haha he's like the time lord, he doesn't age and reincarnates as a different person every once in a while

The bad guys always manage to capture him, tell him their plans, let him escape, miss with their guns and allow him to get the girld and finish the mission....Everytime!!!

i guess on-screen representations of spies suck across the world. and yeah, being an x-factor finalist is definitely the most important.

haha i was trying to sneak that one in there :p

it's not all bourne supremacy lol that first bit sure makes me miss playing golden eye..for hrs lulz

never got to play it but heard it's a classic

And their website is terrible haha. I may have looked into this once or twice myself... ;)

Love that you have a twisted sense of humor! 😂
Really enjoying your content. Cheers!

You're welcome. I mean it. A lot of minnows like me get frustrated. But all they have to do is see the quality people like you provide for us. Delicious!

It takes time to build up a following and you can speed it up with you take the risk to invest in steem, but ultimately i believe the quality of the content will dictate its success

It may not look like it now on the trending page because the platform is still new but it'll get there

I agree. Thank you. I'll get there eventually, I hope. Until then, I am waiting for a @trafalgar tutorial! Haha

Up until this article I was sure you were a spy, especially going through your Twitter feed. Only spies could communicate important message under the guise of and encoded into those hashtags.

But yeah, after this article I am sure you are not one. No spy can have such a terrible intro line :P

haha that's exactly what I wanted you to think ;)

Ahhhh, you are no ordinary gar.....are you Trafal-gar?? I have my eye on you now ;)

I always ask myself the same question! Upvoted Take a look at my last post help spread the steemhttps://steemit.com/yourcityvibez/@adriansky/yourcityvibez-ycv-1-san-francisco-aerial-photography-blood-sport and let me know what you think!

girl bond, i love it

haha, it's hilarious @trafalgar. What do you've to say about the Bond (read spy) girls?

I tell them I'm a north korean spy and they should hook up with me instead of that english barbarian :)

LOL! You're too funny for words @trafalgar.

thank you, you're too kind

Although it's not what it looks like in all the movies, I still think that it's so cool! How would you feel about becoming a spy yourself, @trafalgar?

hmm how do you think north korea successfully pulled off that ransomware attack ;)

Hahah Yeah..
I have just followed you, @trafalgar. Your profile looks very interesting and worth reading! You are more than welcomed to check mine as well ;-)

Funny stuff. If the arch criminals put a bullet in his head when he walked into their casino... there'd be no movie.

Yes, but keep making the same mistake of death will be too easy for you, Mr Bond

From the screen adaptation of The Spy Who Came in From the Cold with Richard Burton.

"What the hell do you think spies are?
Moral philosophers measuring everything they do against the word of God or Karl Marx?
They're not.
They're just a bunch of seedy, squalid bastards like me.
Little men, drunkards, queers, henpecked husbands, civil servants playing cowboys and indians to brighten their rotten little lives.
Do you think they sit like monks in a cell, balancing right against wrong?
Yesterday I would have killed Mundt because I thought him evil and my enemy.
But not today, today he's evil and my friend."

I think that sums it up pretty well.

haha that's brilliant

It's a black & white film from 1965. I highly recommend it. I can see why Richard Burton was such a popular actor. I've noticed recently that there were a lot of films made in years gone by that were really deep and thought provoking. Not the dribble that comes out of Hollywood today.

This is great! "This is why I'm always suspicious of exotic girls who aren't resisting my advances before the roofies kick in."
A true little known fact (a friend of mine is a big Ian Flemming fan), Ian was looking for a bland, ordinary, everyday name for his super spy (I guess in keeping with his low profile actions). He spotted an ornithology book by, you guessed it, James Bond, and thought, "That is the dullest name I've ever heard".
Here is a link to some other Bond oddities.
http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/10/24/25-things-you-probably-didnt-know-about-james-bond

oh yeah he was quite the character
had some bizarre theories like homosexuals couldn't whistle lol

I just got a new drone, makes me feel like a spy. Flies 6km at 60kmh its crazy. HD camera sound and gps position systems. We are living in the future

haha now you're not just limited to those binoculars when it comes to keeping an eye out on that girl next door :)

Out here its more difficult too. The closest house is at least 15 acres away!

Nice post 007! :-)

haha thanks a lot :)

I think the funniest thing about the USB insert is that it doesn't trip a system alarm. Who are all these shitty IT guys that are failing to secure all of these extremely sensitive files? Most enterprise computers require a minimum of Admin access to even use a USB device. Le sigh, proper IT work would kill the whole spy industry.

haha i remember there was a season of prison break that ran on a piece of technology that can just extract all data from your computer/phone/laptop just by bringing it within a few yards lol

Oh ya, Bluetooth is horrrrrible. I disable it on anything and uninstall the drivers. It's the easiest way to backdoor files off a system or phone for sure. Most enterprise computers actually defend their files the same way an encryption attack works. I believe you can get 256 bit encryption during actual runtime now. I was working at a hospital where everything was encrypted and every terminal was basically a couple gig hard drive that you could save some office or excel files on. Everything else was remotely accessed via encrypted network drives and you couldn't do anything without knowing how to backdoor admin access. The admin access would still only allow OS modifications and you would have to be pretty good at programming and somehow manage to get past a 256 bit encryption before an IT lead could just check a message on their phone and respond to kill the connection. Hacking and all of the spy stuff in movies is so hilariously exaggerated and simplified I just laugh at it.

I think if you measure the spike of serotonin of a dad witnessing the born of his child and the very same person inserting a USB the correct way the first time, it would be pretty equal. Btw. Enjoyed your article as always!

hahaha thanks a lot arsenal
yeah USBs are bullshit

I was a dream spy. But now an ordinary man is good

I think most spies as most security services get a good percentage of their information through snitches, so there isn't really that much intelligence work used. The only spies I ever liked were Spy vrs Spy from Mad Magazine, don't know if you ever saw them.

yeah it is much mythologized !

Spies do give off a mysterious vibe. They often work covertly, engaging in adventures and intelligence operations. The mystery may arise from their need to maintain a low profile while carrying out specialized and critical missions. This makes spies a common theme in literature, movies, and entertainment, capturing the curiosity of many.
