Why Do We Like Music?steemCreated with Sketch.

in life •  7 years ago

I admit, I know less about music than everyone I've ever met, which doesn't say much about my expertise on this topic; nor does it say much about how representative my social circles are as they don't comprise of a single deaf person. It's Ok, I can have a go at the hard of hearing because some of my best friends are...oh I see - none of them are deaf and I suppose that's sort of the issue isn't it? Oh well, maybe one of them will go deaf in the future or something.

I got that exact same frisbee

Anyway, while I don't know much about music, I still recognize the big names in the business like Jon Bovi, The Beetle, Coldplay, Cold Chisel, Ice T, Ice Cube, Vanilla Ice...umm...the woman who sings every James Bond theme song...yeah I think that's pretty much everyone who's ever created music ever. However, have you ever stopped to wonder exactly why we enjoy music? Why is it that when we hear certain sounds arranged in a particular order, such as Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, we get a pleasurable sensation; while other sounds like fingernails scratching the blackboard or Rebecca Black's voice can make our skin crawl?

How Popular Is Music?

The music industry generates 18 billion dollars a year in the US alone, which can roughly make up for a couple of days of losses in the cyrpto market. Historically, every recorded culture ever has had some form of music which suggests that music had in many cases began independently in isolated pockets of human civilization. This is quite the claim, for you probably couldn't say the same about agriculture, writing or anal sex. I made up that last one, but I bet no one from Canada has ever had anal sex, they just don't seem to be the type. The French, on the other hand, have always given me the impression that they're a group who never practice any other form of intercourse. But I'm getting off topic.

This picture clearly shows that music is responsible for global warming

For how ubiquitous music can be found among our species, it would be reasonable to assume that it confers some sort of evolutionary benefit. Much like our eyes allow us to perceive and react to our surroundings and our webbed hands allow us to drink soup at the dinner table without using a spoon, music should improve our survival or reproductive success in some way right? Unfortunately the science has yet to reach a consensus on this issue.

Evolutionary Reasons

Certain experts who are not Harvard Professor Steven Pinker, argue that our singing in the shower is akin to a mating call designed to attract the opposite gender so we may mate with them (in the non French way) and in turn pass on our genes. This does go some way to explain why successful music artists are generally considered to be more sexually attractive than, say, assiduous accountants in modern society.

However, other experts, such as Harvard Professor Steven Pinker, believe that there isn't any direct functional or adaptation advantage in music. Rather, our appreciation of music is perhaps just a by product of other evolutionary advantages such as sensitivity to speech, rhythm in muscular movement and social signalling. He theorizes that music is a amalgamation of a multitude of factors that has manifested into its own stimulus which ultimately defines what we experience when we listen to it.

Silent raves - When every venues other than the local library are booked out

Conclusion

While the reasons behind why we enjoy music is still contentious, its effects are palpable. Rarely do you see pregnant women playing the times tables over and over again to their unborn child in an rather vain effort to give them a head start in life, but swap in Mozart and it's all of the sudden perfectly normal. I find this to be cruel - it deprives them the ability to attribute their failures later in life to a lack of prenatal care. 'Maybe I could have amounted to something more than a sales clerk with a mild alcohol addiction if only my mother played me more Chopin when I was in her womb' is an excuse I couldn't imagine myself living without.

Like it or not, music will always be an inextricable part of our lives; especially that of Bono and friends, who'll, from time to time, find their way onto your iTunes playlist uninvited.

I don't know about anyone who is not as awesome I am but I like music because the coolest song ever plays every time I enter any room.

Even the bathroom.

Can you imagine hearing that song every time you answer nature's call?

I can't. Because I crap in a bag.

Thanks a lot my old "teacher"!

It reminds me of
:

hahaha
I think it would be awesome to train a parrot to sing that theme song whenever the mother in law enters the room :)

I'm sorry that I'm climbing into your conversation, here's my work for your topic:

I'm sorry that I'm crawling into your conversation, Andrianna, but when it comes to musical instruments I just prefer a short stake with a spring-loaded clapper on one end. Just stick into the desert and wait for the magic to happen.

;)

Seriously, Pink toilet paper?!?!

Which one is "The Beetle"?

John, Paul, George or Ringo? Or somebody else form the order Coleoptera?

hmm I think they combine together to form 'The Beetle' like Transformers

Loading...

Some of it seems to be universal: this demonstration by Bobby McFerrin in the first 50s of this video apparently works all over the world.

truly an excellent video :)

If you like to make love while listening to music, always choose a live album. That way you'll get an applause every 3 to 4 minutes.

haha no way could I last all the way to the first applause :p

You had to bring Bono into it didn't you?

The picture of the silent rave made me so incredibly sad. One of the best things about music is the social aspect and creation of a common bond. Now someone has found a way to even make hanging out at a club another opportunity to isolate oneself from other humans. Hurray!!!!

Although... as long as they take off their headphones to talk every once and a while, everyone could have a really great time.

"What are you dancing to?"

"New Order. How about you?"

"A podcast about the psychological reasons people gravitate towards 80s music."

haha ya some are just wearing ear warmers

I hate the headphones on planes - they're deliberately uncomfortable and use a different jack so no one steals them which is the only reason why I steal them

Music is life! Not a day goes without listening to it, especially when Im working! It's great! Good post man! :)

thanks a lot firepower, good seeing you outside of the chats :)

I was always there in the shadows! :D But now Im out and about!

Could it be that, since music is basically sound, and we (being animals) use sound to communicate, that music is an extreme stimulus of communicative sounds, sounds that we associate with warnings, danger, happiness, sadness, etc.? When you listen a piece of music you can tell wether it sounds happy of depressing, it can make you feel comfortable of uncomfortable, maybe it has something to do with the need to communicate with others, to be aware of what's going on in your environment, and when you listen music you make your brain think that there's danger around you, or others around you seem to be happy (because the music sounds happy). Maybe we love music so much because we need others around us and the tones that you hear stimulate our basic emotions, just like the sound of someone's voice would (or an other animal's sound).

yes I agree, association with verbal communication would be a very large part of it, as would courtship and social communication

Music is the Meaning of Life.

and all along i thought it was 42

Why not both? haha

Thanks for post @trafalgar) I like different music. Classic or modern music it does not matter. The main thing is that it was nice for a person.+)

You know what: To me music is like a diary. When I open my playlist, every single song in it is directly related to a period of time in my life. There are songs I listened to when I was especially happy, sad, enthusiastic. Songs that accompanied me through great milestones, that remind me of people, situations, relationships. To me music is so much more than just music...:-)
Thanks for touching such an important topic.

that's a really interesting and liberating way of looking at it :)

Thanks :-)

We will forever enjoy music, and the music industry will forever keep on changing, new types of music will come and will always get an audience.

yes, I think that's definitely true

Musicoin is the place to be

Excelente recordar la melodía, sigue con éxito en tu post

Great article. Having worked in the music industry for 18 years, I must admit there is a proven formula that makes people like music, and makes groupies get down on their knees for rockstars. Ha.

Followed.

haha ya music is like a drug

I think you should start singing, as I enjoy your humor more than anyone here on steemit, you are already successful in one aspect. As you said music is contentious and it is a necessary part of our life.
You would make the world laugh and enjoy songs as the most Important thing of life is to be happy and music and humor both can make us happy.
As nobody have ever tried and succeeded in "humor music" much or that i know of, you could be the first in this category or to make this category.
at the end, if your music sense fails, you could still do humor.

hahaha humor music, that should be an emerging genre :)

well, I think you should lead the way in that.

There is most definitely a such things as humor music, weird al yanchovik? Or this guy named Shat who my friends used to talk about, wore a dildo helmit and sang about STDs.... I seriously thought "You're Beautiful" was a joke.

I agree though, I think he should start joining in the open mics.

yes, he can try open mic competition, What do you say @trafalgar

As nobody have ever tried and succeeded in "humor music"

You should try listening to hip-hop/rap music :)

that may sound funny, but they don't try to make it funny.

Hi @trafalgar..this is funny but it does make sense..i think most of the people will love music because music could be soft, hard, slow, fast etc.. yeah i do really enjoy your article. Upvote and follow you now!!

Thanks a lot judeanthony :)

good article!
i don't know why i love it so much, maybe it is natural. music is the soul of human being and is the most beautiful language in the word. I think it can express your inward word whenever you happy or sad preferably.
btw, as for the" moonlight", I prefer the moonlight of Debussy. ^_^

thanks helene
yes I suppose music can be seen as a language that crosses all barriers :)

"..while other sounds like fingernails scratching the blackboard or Rebecca Black's voice can make our skin crawl?.."

Why?? Why did you have to remind me of these? What did I ever do to you!! :P :P

Anyways, great post as always :D

mwuhaha
found your kryptonite

Nice post! There are studies that show listening to music and learning to play is very good for the brain https://bebrainfit.com/music-affects-brain/

very interesting, thanks for the link
see? that's why i'm a bit daft, because not only did mom not play mozart to me when I was in her womb, but I never learned to play an instrument either!

Wow interesting post! I love music!! Upvoted + Following :)

thank you very much :)

I can't imagine how much fun you must have writing these posts! Thank you for making me laugh.

haha I do enjoy it, but it's not quite effortless, sometimes it takes a while to come up with a half decent analogy etc

I am currently writing an article and want to mention you in it. Hope that's fine. Do you post your articles other places than Steemit? :)

To understand music, you have to understand vibration. If you fully understood it, you would understand life.

Wiithout music life would be a mistake.

sure if time allows i'll be glad to take a look

Love your style of writing! The back and forth off-topic humor with a casual conversation type, it's a delight to read.

I was wondering something similar about musical instruments; for some reason I tend to like flute music the most and I've always thought to myself it's probably because our ancestors were more acquainted with blowing bamboos; I'm not even sure if it's one of the oldest instruments. What instrument do you like the most?

Hmm, not too sure, probably something like the piano? But that's likely because we had one in the house when I was a kid

Piano is awesome!
This has been my go-to piano music for quite sometime now:

we had one in the house when I was a kid

Do you play it as well?

haha not since i was a child

Lol, cool. You've been playing with words really well anyway :P

To add to this discussion, isn't it interesting how different people find different sounds enjoyable? I once met a lady who enjoyed the sound of cats having orgies. She tried living with a man named Charlie who had to eat a combination of cat food and beer to sleep at night due to the loudness of the cat orgies outside his window. Wait a minute...

haha :)

I have been playing the guitar for 18 years and music is for me a language that I speak when words in English, Polish, Thai or other languages I speak can't do the job.

thats awesome, I think in a way music can be seen as a universal language

It definitely can. It's got it devices like the key, the tempo, the articulation but I think, first and foremost, It conveys some essence of being that can't be fully expressed through words.

This hits home. Its sometimes baffling how music can change your mood within moments, or change your attitude over time. I wouldn't be able to function correctly without it. It's crazy to me that some people don't even like listening to music.

I'm one of the borderline crazy people who seldom listen to music although I do enjoy it. I honestly think less people dislike music than dislike sex

That one I cannot argue with

Another great article. Informative, engaging and FUNNY!

thanks a lot kus knee, I enjoy your posts too :)

this is the first post I will completely read from top to bottom throughout today. You write very well, I'm inspired

thank you so much, i'm flattered

I'm flattered that you are flattered by my comment lol....Checked your profile, you are really cool

thanks for having a look

you're hilarious, up-voted resteemed and followed.

@trafalgar, I don't know why it's taken me this long to discover your work. After reading this piece, I stalked some of your other work and have started following you. This piece got me thinking, and being a musician myself, I wrote a friendly response post. I'd love to hear your further thoughts on the subject.

thank you, I upvoted your post :)

nice...upvote and resteem for you...

thanks a lot :)

u r welcome...

It took several tries for me to write this comment, "in the non-french way" my stomach hurts.
Have I mentioned that I love Un Pc people? That I think the phrase "politically correct" offends me more than anything else that could ever be said, including cunt? Yup, I went there.
Whatever the reason we love music, I do know that if there were an apocalypse and I had to choose certain people to save where we would live in a protected bunker, a musician would be high on the list. Good thing my brother is a musician, kinda kills two birds with one stone ;)

haha I try to not go out of my way to offend people, but I do sometimes have a dark sense of humor
I think most people can tell that my jokes don't really come from bad intentions irrespective of their subject matter

thanks for checking out the post

This is exactly why I became an audio engineer... I was real concerned that the globe was a bit chilly, and wanted to warm it up! Great post!

lol nice pic

Music activates the mind! For those who create music it's an impulse release of ones self expression. For those who listen. It opens the horizons of insight that's deep with' our own very nature; soul! 😂😂👌

haha all that is still true if you replace the word music with drugs

I don't like music. I love music. It's been a huge part of my life for the longest time. Headphones on :) Thanks for sharing!

thanks for checking out the post

You're welcome :) Steem on!

Music is harmony, complexity, emotion captured in sound. Sound travels through solids. Music travels through souls.

BACH is music. The score to Star Wars is music. The tangos of Astor Piazzola are a seductive, beautiful music, as are the cry of gulls and crashing of waves on a beach, with the wind blowing in the trees.

The war drums of Earth, and the trumpets of Heaven are MUSIC.

I think you speak not much of music.

haha fair enough, I don't know too much about music, but have always wondered why it has such a strong effect on us humans from an evolution perspective

I was feeling poetic at the time--keep steeming!

i think the main thing is the beat ,it takes us into our inner self and relieves us of our inner thoughts and takes us back in time.

yep, just like certain aromas, music has a strong nostalgic effect on us

heres one of my favourites that i think has a good beat and i find relaxing.

I think it is the frequencies that move you. Thanks for your post.

glad you like it ,i love the song but not so sure about the people in the video, all a bunch of junkies.

thanks for checking it out

Yes, you are right @trafalgar
Music is one part of us, especially when we are again lonely.
Music is part of my life.
I like it...

I agree in all with you, but if you would have a different point of view why we listen to music, I write two days ago about that, but with a different approach. Seeing the human being feeling. By the way i upvoted you :)

thanks a lot zaragast

One interesting reason imi is the underlying math that makes music harmonic.

ahh yes, that did show up in my research, but it was quite detailed and I found it difficult to write jokes around it so i skipped it :)

Hello Friend! You have a positive post! I completely agree with you!
I love music! Thank you very much for sharing!

thank you andrianna

Yeah it is sex, definetly. What else, ever? :D

haha ok sigmund freud

It is true. I always sing when entering a bar or nightclub. :D

Another great one tra guy :)

thanks a lot moonwalker :)

Tuning in to instrumental music moves one to tune in and recount a tale about what one listens. In a similar sense, playing a melodic instrument gives you the capacity to recount the story without words. Both require most extreme right mind utilization which practices ones inventiveness as well as ones acumen.

well that probably explains why I can't sing and am lousy in bed :)

Nah I don't think so :)

I love music...

In the topic of sex .... I would be between the French and the Canadians see ... lol * From a certain old counts that it is still still sex. It's hard for the music, because it depends on the level of the alcohol. ... But as a person who grew up with Westbam, Dr Motte, Marusha, Da Hool or some other, more or less known DJs in the 1990s Is, still love most of the electronic sounds......

haha I honestly know very little about music but I was interested in just why we're so drawn to it at an evolutionary level

I always want to reply to your posts but I somehow feel that by being fun on the internet I am somehow going out of character. I love your writing though. I don't usually appreciate intentional humor but good stuff.

haha thanks a lot :)
It's good to have a bit of fun on here among all the charts and technical analysis i think

I'm not really a chart and technical analysis kind of guy. I'm more of the new age bullshit type with an unlikely blend of idealistic anarchism.

I have a bit of a guru vibe going on, I don't really want it but so far it's the easiest way to let people know that I can help them get their existential shit together if they are willing to play ball.

Music can relieve stress ..

not the jaws theme song
it's not great if you have a deadline approaching or you're a surgeon in the emergency room

This is massively off topic but your bio is on fire! Oh my!!! Possibly the best I've seen on here! Plus you already gave me an idea for a new post!

All these reasons!!! Followed.

EDIT: here's the post https://steemit.com/contests/@fisteganos/60-sbd-up-for-grabs-describe-you-your-blog-in-150-characters

haha thanks a lot for checking out my page

Now back to the point.

I have been using music as a therapy for a while now and i'm beginning to fear I'll get too dependent on it.

Two albums get me out of any bad mood; Frank Ocean's Blonde and Chance's Coloring Book.

Yeah I bet you don't know any of those two guys 😂

haha sorry, not a clue
but I think being able to get yourself out of any bad mood is a fantastic option to have at your disposal

I love music, I love how it can be a reflection of our mood or state of mind. If I'm feeling mad I can put on some metal. When I'm feeling down some uplifting tunes can help. If need to concentrate while working on something some classical can be incredibly useful. Without music life would have much less colour

yes the effect that music has over the human mind is extraordinary
it's like a drug

Music is just essential for every human being. Have you ever noticed that when in a crowd with people who sit or stand still, when music begins playing almost everyone begins to move. It is just their brain reacting. Some begin ancing and others just tap 1 finger but without music there is no movement.

haha ya that's true, although without music there would be no movement is probably a pretty contentious law in theoretical physics

For me the musik is peace even if its a sad one :)

haha i suppose you can always change to a more uplifting genre when necessary

I like very much greek music and 90 % of it is very sad . But yes its an option :)

You never cease to make me laugh lol..

he must be kapil sharma of australia, he is too funny.

thank you you're too kind :)

:p

Silent raves - When every venues other than the local library are booked out

ROFL, thanks for the first laugh of the day.

haha you get your name from popping acid?

Nope :p been called that since 7th grade, sure was fun to meet friends parents tho and they all asked the same. XD

haha.

It's also kinda cool that we tend to like different genres of music. Part of the reason why would just be due to nostalgia over what we were exposed to as kids, but personality also plays a big part. I for instance would prefer to listen to Gareth Emery or John O'Callaghan over Adele... yet I also find myself listening to old Italo-disco records.

yes there are powerful cultural environmental factors that dictate the music we like, but as you said, it still varies between individuals

I honestly don't know much about music, but I do find the scientific question of why we enjoy music quite interesting

Because we listen to it.

haha

Congratulations @trafalgar!

You are about facets of music))) there’s not a lot on how pauses are of value ;)

덕분에 더 많은 지식을 얻었습니다. 공유해주셔서 감사합니다.

Mantap,Bro

For me the most interesting part with music is, that we have so many kinds of music. What I like, maybe others are not liking. This is awsome!

yes i love classic music

once a old native indian told me that the reason we like base and rhythmic music ...its because it sounds like our mother's heartbeat when in her womb.
It unconsciously reminds us of her heart beat.

You Rock as always trafalgar.

Interesting

I love music , because it can make you high!! :D

Silent raves? You've gotta be kidding me

So you're telling me that nobody knows why I fist pump in the air to my favorite tunes?

An awsome post!! love music since always, one genre more than others, but always with the music in my ears, in my mind and of course in my soul!!

Interesting article @trafalgar some would say people are attracted to musicians because of their money, fame or social status while that could be part of it they never really mention the actual singing being part of a mating call very interesting.

Most professional musicians do no make much money or have an elevated social status. Celebrity is something different all together. Music is primal - it makes your body move and makes you feel. If you can make a love interest move and feel - you're probably going to have a good date!

Because it touches our soul

Hi, I've seen some of your publications I'm going to follow, follow me and let's collaborate together

音乐是生活中最美好的一面
