Gujarati folk dance known as garba is performed in Gujarat (India) during Navratri, lasting nine nights. Navratri is a major Indian Hindu festival which signifies the triumph of good over evil i.e Goddess Durga defeated the evil Mahishasura, the battle that lasted nine days.

In Garba, dancers revolve in circles as a symbol of time that is cyclical in Hinduism. As the cycle of time revolves, from birth, to life, to death, the only thing that is constant is the Goddess, the one deity in the middle of all infinite movement. The dance signifies that God, represented in feminine form here, is the thing that remains constant in a constantly changing universe.

The songs in Garba typically involve around Lord Krishna. People also wear traditional dresses which are generally red, yellow, orange and pink colored dress called ghagra choli.

The actual dance begins in the night time so to make the proper ambience . All the participants gather at the open space or at street corners. An deity of the goddess is kept in the center and a circle is formed around it.
During initial stage dancing begins with slow tempo and reaches at a fast tempo. A drummer who sit in the center keeps the rhythm.

Some local associations organizes “Garba Mahotsav” every year wherein dancers from all over the world participate. It is estimated that as they attract a gathering of 35,000 dancers and more than 25,000 viewers each night.
