Hygge: A Coziness of the Soul

in life •  7 years ago

A friend recently introduced me to the word, "hygge."

It is a Danish word that is pronounced "hoo gah." It is thought to be an inspiration for the English word, "hug."

I adore words with intricate meanings. Words are a form of art that I am constantly intrigued by.

Hahah!! I love this post. We also say it in Norway! Hyggelig is an Even better Word!

I want to say it all the time now! I feel like I've learned a word I have been missing all this time! 😁
Is "hyggelig" like saying "hoo gah lish?" Haha!

Well, I am Danish and we use the word in all situations really. I think that all people on earth know what it is and means even though they do not have a specific word for it. Sitting calmly with a coffee, beer, cup of tea or fermented yak-milk while your children or grandchildren play nearby - that is it! Could happen in Uganda, Tuscany, Korea or Chile. The best thing is that you don't even need to do anything

My favorite thing that I'm learning is that you can tack it on the end of all kinds of words, like meals, socks, anything that's extra hyggeligt ;)

You will always use it as a prefix, before not after the word you want to hyggefy - like hyggestrømper = hygge socks, hyggested = hygge place, hyggeknald = casual sex.

hyggeknald is a new one to me! haha seems the possibilities are endless!

Haha, perfect! :)

Thank you so much for your comment! I am so excited to learn about this. You're right, everyone knows about it, they just don't know the word. 😁

fermented yak-milk

Uh..wut? Tell me more about this, is it a common Danish beverage?

No, it is a thing in China and Mongolia - just an example that you can hygge everywhere.

Very interesting! I will have to research it.

I think the yak is inner China and Tibet, while the Mongolians, from Turkey to Mongolia use horse milk as they are horse people.

This is soooo adorable and cute.....thanks for sharing about hygee.....I loved it thank you for sharing

Really enjoyed reading your piece of writing....very rare yet interesting word ;)

Yes, yes, yes! This is why we love getting snowed in! Homeschooling and having my husband also work from home means we can just hunker down and enjoy being 'stuck,' especially if it's a power outage! Then the kids have fun huddling around a lantern, snuggling under blankets with tons of books. With a wood cookstove and a hand pump, we still have water available and can still cook and have warm tea and cocoa. And then are days like this past Sunday where we all just needed a day to recharge! We enjoyed fresh baked muffins, played family games like charades and even the adults got naps! Days like these are healthy and necessary, even if most of society thinks this is backwards!

That sounds wonderful! "Society" should never dictate what is right for your family!

This is exactly what a perfect Sunday looks like 😁

Wow, thank you for sharing this word. Now I have a new word learned today, and add to my vocabulary😊

New words are awesome!

My Hygee moments are when i write poetry and read in my couch.. Thank you for sharing this.

That's great! 😊

Sometimes we just really need a hygge (hug) to comfort us in our daily worries. Virtual hugs🤗🤗🤗
