Well, we're doing a lot of moral awakening here.
How do you plan to convert that to empowerment?
I'm also not so filled with fervor for a selfless society. Sounds like a bunch of SJW's to me.
I reckon the reason we are waking up morally is because we are being victimized by evil, and we are acting out of self-preservation to oppose evil, because good acts are good for everybody--enlightened self interest, rather than selflessness.
I'd just as soon that we just empower individuals to work together voluntarily to achieve common good things, rather than impose some kind of quasi-religion trying to imbue selflessness.
You feel me?
Got you covered on all of those points. The elevator pitch version of my response is, "Be a normal cell, not a cancer cell." The current discussion about bots on steemit is a case in point. Nothing wrong with coming to steemit to make money. But do it in a way that is good for the platform or at least not bad for it. Don't game the system to rip off the rewards pool, etc.
Distinguish self interest from selfishness. Everyone must play the game of life to win. That's the pursuit of self interest. Cheating at the game is selfishness. Cheating ruins the game for everyone. In society, selfishness ruins everything, from marriages to parenting to business relationships to politics. Everything. Selfishness is a cancer.
Nothing at all wrong with pursuing self interest.

I am amazed that I agree with every single point you make.
Except this:
We all lose. I suspect that folks that realize this are able to see beyond self interest and graduate to selflessness.
Thanks!

Why do you say that we all lose? Why do you not think that we must all play the game of life to win?
BTW, I am also a carpenter and a scientist, but unlike you, I think that kindness is OVERrated! :) Kindness is the province of the women in the village. Our job as men, as we spend our lives being hunted and hunting, is to fight, expending ourselves for that village. Kindness can come into that in rare moments, but it is not the general character of a man's life.

We all die. The ultimate end of this game of life we play is losing.
Also, I didn't say that kindness was a particular trait of mine, but I believe it is essential to me to do. Mostly I agree, that the kindness of women is their most unappreciated trait.
While I can hunt, kill, and fight, I can do so with kindness. I can kill my game humanely, kill any I must humanely, and fight only when I must, and, again, humanely.
It is a general character of my life.
YMMV

I think that I see what you mean about us being doomed to lose the game of life.
Take out a piece of paper and list the things that you would be willing to risk death for. List things such as pulling your wife out of a burning car, joining the Army to defend your country or to defeat a Hitler type of enemy, rescuing a woman being raped and beaten in an alley, etc.
If you are staring at a blank piece of paper, that means that you are being too hard on yourself with your thought experiments. Few if any of us are psychologically capable of running toward a machine gun firing directly at us. In such situations, "old brain" survival instincts take over. I'm talking about scenarios in which you would be willing to take a reasonable risk in order to protect someone or something that you love.
If you have listed anything on your paper, then you have already won the game of life, because you have found love.
