HOW CAN WE CHANGE PERCEPTIONS?

“There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception"

                                                                                                                                             -  Aldous Huxley

A guy goes to a hostel to meet his new friend from College. His friend opens the door and he enters the room. Now, all he can see are books laying around along with clothes spread all over the room; an untidy look. The first guy makes two judgments about his new friend: (1) With books lying around, it means his friend is quite studious (2) the messy clothes all over the room mean his friend is a disorderly person. The first person made the two judgments in a matter of seconds. In reality, the second person was an orderly person but the less erudite person and he was searching for a receipt for the past 2 hours until the first person knocked on his door.

The point is people make judgments on everything around them and that include judging other people too. The mere criteria of judgment simply do not have any rules, this act is done out of sheer feelings, thoughts, perceptions and they differ from person to person. The judgment directly correlates to perception and the example above depicts the perfect story of perception. The first person made the judgment that was heavily influenced by his observation of the room that belonged to his new friend.

When talking about perception, one glass of water example of a Pessimist and Optimist cannot be neglected. There is a half glass of water and two men are staring at it. Both of them know that they are looking at a half glass of water. The Pessimist will perceive it as half empty and the Optimist will see it as half full. The judgments differ though both men are looking at the same thing. It is because of the reason that perception varies from one person to another. The Pessimist observed negativity in it and perceived the glass as half empty. On the other hand, the Optimist felt positivity and deemed it as half full.  There can be factors such as emotional state, personal agenda or expectations behind the judgments that both men made.

A perception of a person can change, but there is need of some solid reasoning since you cannot force a person to change his/her way of looking at things. An example can be given of changing the perception of a Pessimist. You can change it giving a cause to that person, by showing positive aspects of various things in life or even by trying to eliminate the negativity.

It has been observed that once a person forms a perception about anything, it can become really challenging to alter that perception. It comes back again to the first example in the start; the person that entered the room made a judgment based on his perception that his friend has an untidy nature. The dilemma is that people have perceptions and they do not go the extra mile to change it. People activate this mode in them in which a saturation process comes into play; they do not make efforts to collect information that defy their perception and they take up any kind of information that solidifies their impression. They only take what satisfies their constant need to tell themselves that what they believe in is true and everything that they don’t believe in……. is false. This kind of attitude can have an immense negative impact on a person’s psychology. The decision making becomes biased as a result of it.

It is difficult to change another person’s perception and it is even more demanding if a person has to change his/her own opinion about anything. It is time-consuming and there are no certainties that giving a lot of time to change perception can be fruitful or not. We can change our perceptions, emotions, thoughts, and behaviors with the help of clinical hypnotherapy. The use of hypnotherapy is quite effective since it develops a subconscious change in a person. The particular change comes in various aspects of psychology such as thoughts, responses, feelings, and attitudes. You can alter your perception through clinical psychology and it enables you to see another side of the picture that you willingly or unwillingly did not see. There are various types of hypnotherapy such as traditional, analytical, and cognitive/behavioral hypnotherapy.

We can have our perceptions changed from half empty to half full with the help of clinical hypnotherapy. A person that is hypnotized during clinical hypnotherapy shows heightened responsiveness and openness; these are the behavioral characteristics that cannot be achieved easily. Clinical hypnotherapy subdues a person’s mind and calmly changes the perception without affecting the mental health of a person. It is safe and it has helped uncountable people all over the world. The answer to changing the perception in the most effective way is clinical hypnotherapy.
