A Dutch tradition: Kingsday

in life •  7 years ago

Today it is an national holiday, Kingsday. It's the birthday of Willem Alexander, our king. It's tradition that Willem Alexander and his family visit a city in Holland where they celebrate this birthday. The city organizes all kind of games, plays and other festivities in his honor. Most of the country has a day of, but some have to work..

Almost in all households people are raising the flag's

In all cities there are a lot of festivities going on and a big tradition are the 'garage sales'. Everbody is trying to sell the stuff that was already in their houses or garages for ages. Sometimes there are some nice things but mostly it is garbage.

We went to Warnsveld, a little village near Zutphen. It was crowded and the weather was a bit cold, but dry.

It's fun to see how many people do leave with 'new bought' stuff from the sales. Of course there are some things that can for sure get a second life, but mostly it's garbage :)

Besides the garage sales you can (of course) have a drink and a bite almost everywhere.

Kids where demonstrating their skills on all kinds of things, music, magic and even a circusball.

And for those not familiar yet, the royal color in the Netherlands is Orange ;)

Have a great day !!

Nice did you have a tompoes ?

Of course, Kingsday without a tompoes is like a sun without heat :)
